Nigerian Super Falcons Soar to Historic 10th WAFCON Title, Sparking Celebrations and Retirement Rumors

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have once again etched their names in history, securing a record-extending 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title. Their triumph came after a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over host nation Morocco in the final match held at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

The final was a test of resilience for the Nigerian squad. Morocco, playing in front of their home crowd, started strong, with Ghiziane Chebbak striking first in the 13th minute to give them the lead. Their advantage was further extended in the 24th minute when Sanaa Mssoudy scored a second goal, sending Morocco into halftime with a two-goal cushion.

However, the Super Falcons, under the guidance of head coach Justin Madugu, mounted a spectacular second-half comeback. Madugu introduced Rinsola Babajide and Jennifer Echegini to inject speed into the attack. The turning point began in the 64th minute when Esther Okoronkwo successfully converted a penalty, narrowing the deficit to 2-1. Just seven minutes later, in the 71st minute, Okoronkwo turned provider, assisting Folashade Ijamilusi for the equalizer. The drama intensified as Madugu brought on five-time CAF Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala. The decisive goal came in the 88th minute, with Esther Okoronkwo once again making a crucial play, setting up Jennifer Echegini to secure the winning goal and the championship for Nigeria.

The historic victory sparked widespread celebrations, with prominent figures commending the team's achievement. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was among the first to extend his congratulations. In a social media post, he highlighted that the win was a "reminder of what can happen when talent, discipline, and belief come together," thanking the players, coaches, and staff for making the country proud and showcasing "the strength and spirit of Nigerian football."

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, also conveyed her heartfelt congratulations, praising the Super Falcons' "resilience in the thrilling comeback against a formidable Moroccan side." She celebrated their "landmark victory" as "not just another trophy; it is a testament to your hard work, consistency, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit." Senator Tinubu further declared them "ambassadors of Nigerian excellence," inspiring millions globally and cementing their place as "Queens of African football."
