Nigerian Airlines Avert Shutdown After Presidential Intervention on Jet Fuel Costs

The Airline Operators of Nigeria had threatened a nationwide cessation of flights due to soaring aviation fuel prices, a move that would have severely disrupted travel across Africa's largest domestic aviation market.

Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo confirmed that President Tinubu agreed in principle to partial debt relief covering obligations to agencies includingFAAN and NCAA.

The agreement temporarily suspended the planned shutdown.

A government committee has also been established to review taxes on domestic air tickets, with the goal of reducing passenger costs and improving airline viability.

However, some airline executives are calling for a complete debt waiver and suspension of further payment obligations until global fuel supply disruptions are resolved, indicating the underlying crisis remains unresolved.
