Nigeria Breaks New Ground: Direct Flights to Brazil Launch Under Landmark Aviation Agreement
Nigeria and Brazil have formally entered into a Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA), establishing a framework for direct air connectivity between the two nations. This significant agreement was signed by Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Brazil's Minister of Transport, Silvio Costa Filho. The pact is poised to unlock new opportunities for trade, tourism, investment, and strengthen people-to-people exchanges, fostering stronger economic integration, cultural ties, and diplomatic cooperation.
The agreement was highlighted as a strategic milestone by Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser, Media to the Nigerian Minister, who emphasized President Bola Tinubu's administration's dedication to expanding Nigeria's global partnerships and cultivating an environment conducive to commerce and mobility. During President Tinubu's visit to Brazil, accompanied by a high-level delegation including the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Olawale Edun, and the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, among others, the BASA was a major point of discussion and formalisation. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva lauded the partnership, expressing Brazil's keen interest in deepening ties with Nigeria across multiple sectors, including aviation, agriculture, and infrastructure development. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) formalizing the BASA was described as a crucial step in bolstering bilateral relations between the largest economies in their respective continents.
Following the agreement, Air Peace, a Nigerian carrier, announced that it has secured approval to commence direct passenger flights between Lagos, Nigeria, and São Paulo, Brazil.
