Nigeria deeply mourns the passing of Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, a centenarian Afenifere leader and elder statesman, whose death prompted tributes from President Bola Tinubu and other key figures. His extensive legacy is marked by unwavering commitment to integrity, democracy, social justice, and selfless service to the less privileged, profoundly shaping the nation.
Nigeria mourns the passing of Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, a revered Afenifere leader and elder statesman, who died at the venerable age of 100. President Bola Tinubu, in a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, extended his profound sadness and commiserations to the Fasoranti family, the Akure Kingdom, Ondo State, and the entire Afenifere family. President Tinubu hailed Fasoranti as an icon of integrity, discipline, and selfless service, recognizing his immense contributions to Nigeria’s development and his courageous fight for the nation's democracy.
Described by President Tinubu as a beacon of principle and one of the last great titans of Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s progressive family, Pa Fasoranti’s century-long life served as a profound lesson in integrity, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to the Yoruba people and the unity and progress of Nigeria. His distinguished career spanned various critical roles, including an educationist and principal, Commissioner for Finance in Ondo State, and later as the esteemed leader of Afenifere. Throughout his life, Baba consistently championed true federalism, social justice, and a Nigeria that works for all its citizens. Tinubu also recalled Pa Fasoranti's centenary on May 11, 2026, when a legacy of honour was celebrated, and reminisced about the elder statesman's prayers and counsel during his 2022 presidential bid, which Fasoranti predicted would be successful in his lifetime.
Abagun Kolu Omololu, Afenifere’s National Organising Secretary, corroborated these sentiments during an interview with ARISE NEWS, emphasizing Pa Fasoranti's dedication to serving the less privileged and fostering an egalitarian society, rather than pursuing political power or personal wealth. Omololu highlighted Baba's embodiment of selflessness, contentment, and public service, asserting that his commitment to the welfare of ordinary Nigerians was central to his enduring legacy. He remarked that Fasoranti's life was centered on the principle of ensuring the well-being of the poor, reflecting the egalitarian ideals of Awolowo.
Pa Fasoranti's steadfast commitment to democratic values was evident throughout his life, starting from his graduation from the University of Ibadan in 1951. He navigated significant political turmoil, including being unjustly jailed alongside Ajasi by military presidents despite being found not guilty by the courts. His resilience was further demonstrated during the First Republic in 1964, when he won an election as the head of Kure Municipal Council, only for the results to be manipulated against him; yet, he never deviated from his commitment to goodness and public service.
His contributions extended significantly to education. Omololu recalled that Fasoranti founded schools to provide citizens with access to learning, notably the Omoliri School, which was the first private school in the entire Ondo Province. When the government later sought to take over the school, Baba willingly handed it over, ensuring its continued operation and benefit to the community. This institution, now in Ondo State, continues to run, standing as a testament to his educational foresight.
Demonstrating his profound personal integrity and unwavering principles, Fasoranti notably declined an opportunity to become governor of Ondo State after the death of his wife. He stated that he could not be a governor without a wife and was not ready to remarry, prioritizing personal conviction over political ambition. As a leader, he was renowned for his inclusive approach, listening attentively to people from all walks of life and allowing diverse views to be heard during meetings. Omololu recognized him as one of the last major figures carrying forward the political tradition established by the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
Pa Fasoranti’s legacy, therefore, is rooted firmly in his lifelong democratic struggle, his profound impact on education, his unwavering advocacy for social equality, and his selfless service to ordinary people. Despite past divisions within Afenifere and the loss of prominent leaders, Omololu expressed confidence in the organization's future, asserting its ability to preserve its leadership tradition and continue its vital contributions to Nigeria’s development. His life stands as an inspirational example of steadfast dedication to noble causes and the betterment of society.
