Nasarawa Cleric Jailed Over Debunked Herdsmen Attack Report, Draws Public Outcry!

A viral video shared by Evangelist Daniel Ukpo ignited significant social media concern, alleging that suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded Agboda village in Nasarawa State, disrupting a crusade and causing widespread unrest. The video depicted Christian faithfuls running in panic, with Ukpo stating, "We came in for a crusade here and as I talking to you, some herdsmen invaded the place. You can see the youths. Everywhere, there is unrest." This footage led to broad condemnation from Nigerians online, criticizing the alleged actions of the invaders.

Following the video's dissemination, Apostle Michael Olowookere, another Nigerian cleric, publicly condemned the Nasarawa State police command for apprehending Evangelist Daniel Ukpo. Olowookere accused the government of selectively targeting Christians while failing to address the activities of bandits who openly boast about attacks on Nigerian citizens. He issued a strong call to all Christians to demand Ukpo's immediate release. Reports circulated on X (formerly Twitter) indicating that Ukpo had been arrested and was held by the police for over 12 hours, with the Nasarawa State police initially withholding comment on the development.

However, the Nasarawa State Police Command later issued a formal statement through its spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, refuting the claims made in Evangelist Ukpo's viral video. Nansel categorically stated that no herdsmen attack or disruption of a crusade occurred anywhere in Nasarawa State, clarifying that the video did not accurately reflect the situation in Agboda Village. Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that on November 24, 2025, a motorcyclist was attacked by unknown assailants along a feeder road leading to Agboda Village. The victim sustained a machete cut, and his motorcycle was stolen. Police, in conjunction with vigilante members, pursued the suspects, who abandoned the stolen motorcycle and fled. The victim is currently recovering in the hospital.

SP Nansel further disclosed that Evangelist Daniel Ukpo, who created the viral video, was in police custody and had confirmed that "there was no herdsmen attack and no disruption of any crusade as reported." Ukpo reportedly explained that he recorded the video amidst the commotion caused by residents rushing to the scene of the robbery incident, leading to its misrepresentation online. In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, urged religious leaders to leverage their platforms to foster peace and harmony, cautioning against making statements capable of inciting tension within the state and the nation. He also appealed to journalists and the public to exercise patriotism by verifying information before publication, thereby preventing the spread of unverified or sensational reports that could cause public panic. The Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and encouraged residents to report suspicious activities through official channels.
