The Young Progressives Party (YPP) has provided a detailed explanation regarding the voluntary withdrawal of its former presidential candidate, Mrs. Anita Zugwai Chukwu, from the upcoming 2027 presidential election. The party categorically denied any claims that her decision was made under compulsion, asserting that her stepping down was a free and voluntary act following extensive consultations with her immediate and extended family members.

According to Comrade Egbeola Wale Martins, the YPP’s National Publicity Secretary, Mrs. Chukwu was initially and validly nominated as the party's presidential candidate at its 3rd Elective National Convention and Presidential Primary, held on May 30, 2026. During this event, she received unanimous endorsement from all members present. Her selection was a testament to her impressive track record, proven competence, demonstrated excellence, and her perceived ability to effectively implement the YPP’s manifesto, which champions an egalitarian society founded on principles of justice, equity, opportunity, and prosperity.

However, Mrs. Chukwu formally communicated her decision to withdraw from the presidential race via a letter dated August 12, 2026. This decision, as explained by the YPP, stemmed from genuine concerns raised by her family regarding the prevailing security situation in the country and the rigorous demands inherently associated with a presidential campaign. These demands include extensive travelling, numerous public appearances, and an increased level of public exposure, all of which would intensify as the 2027 general election approached.

The YPP emphatically maintained that Mrs. Chukwu’s withdrawal was entirely voluntary, reiterating that she was neither pressured nor intimidated into making her decision. The YPP also strongly rejected any suggestions that Dr. Agada’s emergence diminished Mrs. Chukwu’s significant role or invaluable contributions to the party.
