On Wednesday, July 9, a section of Luhya community grassroots leaders endorsed Kagure for the 2027 Nairobi governorship.

Speaking at Jeevanjee Gardens, the leaders backed Kagure's bid to unseat the incumbent, Governor Johnson Sakaja, in the upcoming elections.

They regretted that since 2013, Nairobi county has been doing experiments by electing non-performing leaders.

According to the grassroots leaders, Nairobi has not developed because the elected leaders lack the standards to bring meaningful development.

They pointed out the issues affecting the county such as poor waste management, which they said requires a visionary leader to resolve.

"Nairobi in 2027—we should look at Agnes Kagure; she is the only person who can transform this Nairobi. We must leave experients. In Nairobi we have been doing experiments in every election since 2013. We do not want to elect leaders who can transform the capital; we have no standards.
As Nairobi City County, we must have standards. It's very sad that anybody can be elected a governor in Nairobi. Look at Kisumu; they have standards. Most of their leaders, from the governor to his deputy and senator, are professors," one of the leaders said.

They argued that Kagure stands a better chance to reform the capital given his experience in running her private businesses.

"In Nairobi boda bodas are everywhere, and people urinate anywhere; that is why I am saying in 2027 we must pick Kagure. We must leave the experiment and elect a serious person to be the governor. And Kagure is a very patient leader. She has all the qualities of a good leader; she has expressed herself through running successful private businesses," they added.

The endorsement comes a few days after Westlands Member of Parliament Tim Wanyonyi dropped his bid to seek Nairobi's gubernatorial seat in 2027.

Recently, eight out of nine members of parliament from Bungoma county want Westlands MP to be the governor of Bungoma county after Governor Ken Lusaka's second and final term.

The lawmakers argue that Wanyonyi's development record and empowerment initiatives in Nairobi and his home county make him a good fit to succeed Lusaka.

They are Bumula's Jack Wamboka, Martin Wanyonyi (Webuye East), John Waluke (Sirisia), John Chikati (Tongaren), Dan Wanyama (Webuye West), John Makali (Kanduyi), Kabuchai's Majimbo Kalasinga and Fred Kapondi of the Mt Elgon constituency.
