On Tuesday, June 17, a heartbreaking video emerged showing the exact moment a police officer shot a hawker selling masks to protesters.
In the video, the hawker was seen leaning against a wall of a building along Moi Avenue when he was approached by two armed police officers.
One officer struck the man, identified as Boniace Kariuki, with the barrel of his gun, and before the man could fall, the other officer shot him in the head at close range, in the presence of protesters.
The incident attracted a lot of anger among Kenyans, with many calling for action against the officer involved in the shooting.
In a tweet on Wednesday, June 17, Kagure termed the shooting of an unarmed hawker as shocking.
The businesswoman said police were openly abusing power by unleashing terror on innocent Kenyans, adding that life is sacred and should not be treated casually.
Kagure, who is eying the Nairobi gubernatorial seat, called for the fast-tracking of police reform to restore the confidence of Kenyans in the National Police Service (NPS).
"The point-blank shooting of Boniface Kariuki, an unarmed mask vendor, during protests in the CBD is a shocking abuse of power by the police, and a reminder of the need to fast-track much-needed reforms and arrest the deteriorating public-police relations. Life is sacred and must never be treated this casually. We can do better!"
