N500 Billion Asset Recovery Under Tinubu: Shettima Hails EFCC's Stride Against Corruption

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has achieved significant milestones within the first two years of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, recovering assets valued at over ₦500 billion and securing more than 7,000 convictions. This revelation was made by Vice President Kashim Shettima during the 7th edition of a three-day capacity-building workshop for judges and justices, jointly organized by the EFCC and the National Judicial Institute in Abuja, as reported by Channels TV.
Vice President Shettima emphasized that the government's commitment to a policy of non-interference in the operations of anti-graft agencies has played a crucial role in strengthening the fight against corruption and enhancing institutional accountability. He stated, “As an administration, we have prioritised public accountability by strengthening the anti-corruption agencies and giving them the needed independence to execute their statutory mandates.” He further highlighted that this enabling environment is evident in the tangible impact observed over the past two years.
A key aspect of the administration's strategy involves channeling the proceeds from these recovered assets into vital developmental initiatives. Shettima explained that these funds are being reintegrated into the economy to support critical social investment programs, specifically mentioning the students’ loan and consumer credit schemes. This demonstrates a clear effort to ensure that the gains from anti-corruption efforts directly benefit the populace.
Furthermore, the government is actively working to support the judiciary within the boundaries of the separation of powers. Vice President Shettima noted that the remuneration of judges has improved, and there is an ongoing commitment to further enhance their welfare and upgrade judicial facilities. This support aims to bolster the independence and effectiveness of the judicial system, which is crucial for a robust anti-corruption framework.
Reaffirming the administration’s unwavering commitment to the rule of law, Shettima asserted that President Tinubu does not shield any political allies from investigation or prosecution. He stated, “There is no person or group who can accuse this administration of protecting political actors. We have allowed both the judiciary and the anti-corruption agencies to exercise their powers to restore sanity.” This underscores the principle of equal application of the law.
The Vice President urged judicial officers to uphold the highest standards of integrity and patriotism in their duties, stressing the pervasive impact of corruption on all segments of society. He cautioned, “Corruption is no respecter of persons. Judges are not insulated from its consequences. There are no special roads, hospitals, or communities for judges—we all face the same risks from the effects of corruption.” He concluded by calling for collaborative efforts among all arms of government to fortify the anti-corruption campaign, reiterating that a corruption-free Nigeria is achievable through collective commitment and accountability.
