Mystery Item Sparks Mass Evacuation in Glossop Garden

An 'explosives'-related incident prompted widespread evacuations and road closures in Glossop on Sunday, July 5. The event, believed to have originated on Chapel Street, led to multiple police vehicles cordoning off sections of High Street West, a popular area known for its bars and restaurants. Emergency crews swiftly responded, temporarily evacuating local residents and nearby businesses after the alarm was raised regarding a suspicious item.

The item in question was discovered by Louis Ashurst and his partner Tom while gardening. Ashurst reported that the object, found just under the surface, piqued their curiosity. Upon running a description through Grok, he was advised to report it due to its shape. A first responder arrived within ten minutes, escalated the situation, and established a 100-meter perimeter. Ashurst noted they were awaiting the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to inspect the item.

Derbyshire Constabulary later confirmed that an unexploded piece of ordnance, believed to be from the Second World War, had been found. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit teams were dispatched to the scene to assess the device. Social media was abuzz with comments and pictures showing police roadblocks on the main high street, with one user commenting, "On Chapel Street our street have been evacuated and surrounding area," and another adding, "It’s in someone’s garden!! I heard all sirens going."

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Police issued a statement, reiterating, "A cordon is in place in Glossop town centre following an unexploded piece of what is believed to be WW2 ordnance found in the garden of a property in Chapel Street today (5 July)." The statement further detailed that a number of homes in the area had been evacuated as a precautionary measure while awaiting the arrival of the Army's bomb disposal team. Residents not directly spoken to by officers were informed that evacuation was not required at that time, with further information to be provided as it became available.
