Massive Manchester Airport Terminal 3 Project Set for 2028 Debut
Manchester Airport is undergoing a significant multimillion-pound expansion of Terminal 3, with new features rolling out from 2028. The project will add 2,000 square metres to the departure lounge and introduce new retail and dining options, building on recent upgrades like the Sporting Chance sports bar and the upcoming Terracotta Italian restaurant.
Manchester Airport has confirmed a significant, multimillion-pound expansion of Terminal 3, with a phased opening of new features expected from 2028. This project is a crucial part of the airport's overall multibillion-pound transformation programme, which commenced in 2017 and has already seen a complete overhaul of Terminal 2, doubling its size with extensions opening in 2021 and a refurbishment of the original building.
The development of T3 will dramatically enhance the passenger experience, notably increasing the departure lounge by over a third, adding approximately 2,000 square metres of floor space. Architectural improvements include raising ceilings to allow for more natural light, contributing to a more spacious and welcoming environment. Additionally, the expansion will introduce a range of new shops, with more retailers to be announced following a competitive tender process.
Passengers will begin to see immediate changes, as a new Italian restaurant named Terracotta is slated to open in November. This follows other recent upgrades, such as the opening of Sporting Chance in March this year, a 470-seat sports bar offering airfield views, located in an area previously used for private lounges and a viewing area. Earlier changes also included a new entrance and security area, utilizing space from the former Terminal 1.
As part of the wider airport transformation, Terminal 1 was closed in March, with all its airline operations, except for Ryanair, relocating to Terminal 2. Ryanair will remain the exclusive operator from Terminal 3. The space gained from the closure of T1 is being repurposed to facilitate the expansion of T3, with a section of the former T1 already integrated into the passenger route from security to departures, creating a more open walkway.
Discussions regarding renaming T3 to T1 were held by airport bosses; however, the decision was made to retain the T3 designation due to complex internal, external, and airfield infrastructure issues, including signage and road marking. While the exact cost of the latest T3 project has not been disclosed, elements are still being finalized.
Chris Woodroofe, Manchester Airport Managing Director, expressed pride in the airport's role in connecting the north to the world and serving record passenger numbers. He highlighted the successful redevelopment of Terminal 2 and the current focus on accelerating improvements in Terminal 3 to provide more space and facilities, particularly for Ryanair passengers, with further announcements expected soon.
Key changes already implemented at Terminal 3 include the new entrance and security area utilizing T1 space, and the opening of Sporting Chance, while former eateries such as Trattoria Milano, The Lion and the Antelope, The Hangar, Kiosco, and Pork & Pickle have closed. Upcoming changes include the opening of Terracotta, the increased departures lounge, enhanced natural light, and the introduction of additional retail units.
