Marvel Shocks Fans with First Look at Anya Taylor-Joy’s X-Men Replacement!

The X-Men are poised to reclaim their status as a cornerstone of Marvel's future, with Disney now having full creative control over the iconic mutant team. This renewed focus promises more mutants will step into the spotlight, appearing across various live-action and animated projects. Among these, Magik stands out as one of the most intriguing fan-favorite characters from the comics, despite having only one significant live-action appearance to date.

Marvel Animation has officially unveiled a fresh iteration of Magik, whose real name is Illyana Rasputina, in the new trailer for X-Men ’97 Season 2. The character is voiced by Courtenay Taylor. This animated debut marks a significant moment, as it supplants Anya Taylor-Joy’s portrayal in the 2020 film The New Mutants as the most recent screen adaptation of the character. For many fans, the new animated take offers a welcome refresh, especially given the mixed reception of her prior live-action outing.

Magik’s presence in X-Men ’97 Season 1 was subtle and indirect. Fans caught a glimpse of her adult form when Morph transformed into the character, providing a visual without actually featuring Illyana in the story. Additionally, a picture of Magik was displayed on Forge’s board of X-Men members, indicating she was alive. However, new footage from Season 2 hints at a dramatic turn, suggesting she might either die very early in the season or that her death will be explored through a flashback sequence.

This narrative direction aligns with Magik’s extensive comic book history, which is notably marked by themes of death and resurrection, often accompanied by elements of darkness. One of her most famous storylines involved her death from the Legacy Virus, only to be brought back in an alternate form known as Darkchylde by the demon Belasco. Such a rich background ensures the series has numerous options for exploring her complex story.

The cast bringing X-Men ’97 to life includes Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, A.J. LoCascio as Gambit, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler. X-Men ’97 Season 2 is set to debut soon on Disney+.
