Mamelodi Sundowns' DR Congo Drama: Lineup Revealed Amidst Tough Clash

Mamelodi Sundowns, the 2016 CAF Champions League holders, recently faced Saint-Eloi Lupopo in a critical Matchday 5 Group C encounter, with the ambition of drawing level on points with group leaders Al Hilal. Coach Miguel Cardoso strategically opted for experienced players in his starting lineup, a decision made after their midweek 2-1 victory over Gomora United in the Nedbank Cup round of 32.
Sundowns’ journey in the group stage leading up to this fixture had been tightly contested. Their campaign began with a 3-1 triumph over Lupopo in November 2025. This was followed by a goalless draw against MC Alger, then a 2-2 draw against Al-Hilal Omdurman on January 23, before they suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to the same opponents a week later, intensifying the pressure for a positive result in this Matchday 5 clash.
For the highly anticipated Matchday 5 fixture against Saint-Eloi Lupopo, Mamelodi Sundowns’ confirmed starting eleven included Williams, Mudau, Ndamane, Kekana, Modiba, Adams, Mokoena, Santos, Morena, Sales, and Shalulile. Their substitutes were Onyango, Reisinho, Allende, Leon, Rayners, Matthews, Lunga, Zwane, and Johannes. Saint-Eloi Lupopo’s lineup featured Kabamba, Mpeko, Douhadji, Nekadio, Kimputu, Mendy, Mika, Mabou, Mbele, Lihozasia, and Tukumbange.
The Matchday 5 encounter saw Mamelodi Sundowns share the spoils with FC Saint-Eloi Lupopo after a 1-1 draw. The hosts struck first, with Henoc Molia Lihozasia finding the net in the 19th minute to give Lupopo the lead. Despite controlling large spells of possession in the opening half, Sundowns struggled to convert their dominance into clear-cut chances, allowing the Congolese side to maintain their advantage heading into the break.
Sundowns emerged with renewed urgency in the second half and were rewarded in the 55th minute when Jayden Adams arrived at the opportune moment to score, bringing Kabo Yellow back on level terms. Despite enjoying more of the ball after the equalizer, Sundowns were unable to force a decisive breakthrough. Lupopo remained exceptionally organized and disciplined in defense, effectively limiting space in the final third and seeing out the remainder of the contest to secure a point.
The 1-1 draw has significant implications for Group C. Sundowns now sit in third place with six points, while Lupopo are fourth with five points. At the top of the standings, Al-Hilal leads with eight points, closely followed by MC Alger with seven. This result ensures that the group remains wide open, setting the stage for a tense and decisive final round of matches as teams vie for a spot in the quarterfinals.
