Osun Erupts: Election Fury, Davido Clash & EFCC Probe Rock State Politics!

The upcoming governorship election in Osun State, scheduled for August 15, 2026, has become a focal point of significant political debate, legal discourse, and civil society concerns. Various stakeholders have voiced opinions ranging from the powers of anti-graft agencies to election integrity and campaign strategies, all pointing to a highly charged political atmosphere.

A legal practitioner and public affairs analyst, Frank Tietie, asserted that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) possesses the statutory authority to freeze accounts suspected of illegal activities without prior consultation. Speaking on Arise Television, Tietie referenced decisions by the Court of Appeal and specific provisions in Section 34 of the EFCC Act and Section 7, Subsection 6 of the Money Laundering Act. His comments followed the EFCC's freezing of the Osun state government account shortly before a previous governorship election, an action swiftly overturned by President Bola Tinubu. Tietie argued that hindering the EFCC in exercising such powers, even during an election season, would be unpatriotic and a gross negligence, especially if state monies were potentially being funneled for nefarious purposes like terrorist financing. Another legal opinion from Falana also confirmed the EFCC's legal empowerment to freeze federal and state government accounts.

Amidst these legal discussions, concerns over the fairness and credibility of the election itself have been raised. Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), issued a strong warning to Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is seeking re-election under the Accord Party. Momodu alleged that President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) intend to use the Osun election as a "dress rehearsal" for their 2027 presidential election preparations. He claimed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is under the "complete control" of President Tinubu and urged Adeleke not to expect a free, fair, and credible election. Momodu further stated that APC members in Osun had been instructed to secure victory "by any means necessary."

Adding to the apprehension, the non-governmental organization Yiaga Africa has expressed profound concern over the escalating pre-election violence in Osun State. Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, highlighted reports of political abductions and loss of lives, describing the situation as tense and highly competitive. Yiaga Africa has called upon President Tinubu to issue a forceful statement to security agencies, urging them to ensure a normal process and to refrain from interfering with the election. Itodo also emphasized the need for the President to warn those who might attempt to "instrumentalize security agencies" or abuse "federal might" that they would face legal consequences, aiming to instill public confidence in the electoral process.

The campaign efforts for the incumbent, Governor Ademola Adeleke, have also drawn scrutiny. Nigerian reality star and comedian DeeOne challenged singer Davido, Governor Adeleke's uncle, to base his campaign efforts on the governor's achievements rather than his personal brand. Speaking in a video, DeeOne argued that Osun State citizens deserve good governance, not just good entertainers, and warned that Adeleke would lose re-election if his accomplishments over the past four years were not adequately showcased to the public. This sentiment underscores the public's desire for accountability and tangible results from their elected officials.
