Major Shake-Up Fallout: Mark Thompson Retains CNN Role Amid Skydance's Warner Acquisition
Mark Thompson will remain at the helm of CNN following Skydance's acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, a move that aims to reassure staffers concerned about the network's future. Thompson expressed confidence in the new owners' commitment to independent journalism, despite pending finalization of operational specifics.
Mark Thompson, the current head of CNN, has announced his decision to remain in charge of the news organization following the acquisition of its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, by Skydance. This move is expected to bring a sense of reassurance to many CNN staffers who had expressed concerns about the network's future. In a memo to employees, Thompson conveyed his strong belief that Skydance's new owners possess a deep understanding and commitment to supporting the principles and practices of independent journalism that CNN has consistently upheld. He affirmed his intention to lead CNN into this new chapter, with the network becoming a key asset within Skydance's portfolio of major media and global brands, maintaining his role as an independent Editor-in-Chief with current responsibilities and prerogatives.
The news of Thompson's continued leadership comes after he revealed last week that he was in discussions with the company then known as Paramount regarding his role. Staffers at CNN had been grappling with trepidations about the news division's fate under the new ownership, with particular concerns raised about Paramount CEO David Ellison’s perceived commitment to credible newsgathering, especially in light of scrutiny over his appointee at CBS News, Bari Weiss. Additionally, anxieties revolved around the potential direction for CNN’s burgeoning streaming service, an area where CNN's progress with digital audiences has already been hampered by numerous shifts in corporate strategy over recent years.
Thompson candidly acknowledged the widespread unease among his team. "I know many of you have had trepidations about this moment. That’s understandable — indeed, as I’ve hinted before, I’ve had the odd moment or two myself!" he stated in his memo. However, he expressed a remarkably positive outlook on the eve of what he termed the "acquisition of CNN by Paramount Skydance." He conveyed a genuine belief that they would be collaborating with a team characterized not only by vision and energy but also by strong values.
During his tenure, Thompson has strategically focused on expanding CNN’s reach to younger demographics and digital audiences. The network has been actively experimenting with new formats, including its "CNN All Access" subscription service, and has successfully promoted rising talents such as Abby Phillip and Harry Enten, who have gained significant traction. This focus aimed to rejuvenate the network's appeal amidst a challenging media landscape.
Despite these efforts, CNN's financial trajectory has seen shifts. Warner Bros. Discovery, in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission earlier this year, projected that CNN is expected to generate $600 million in profit by 2026 on revenues of $1.8 billion. While CNN remains a substantial contributor to Warner’s overall profitability, its financial engines are noted to be less potent than in previous years when it reportedly generated $1 billion in profit. Under Warner Bros. Discovery's stewardship, management and personnel changes contributed to a longer-term downturn in ratings, leaving CNN striving to recover. Furthermore, Warner Bros. Discovery notably impeded CNN’s advancement in the streaming sector by discontinuing CNN+, a venture that contrasted sharply with rivals like NBC, CBS, ABC, MS NOW, and Fox News, which forged ahead with their own broadband initiatives.
Thompson concluded his message by acknowledging that the precise integration and operational specifics of CNN within the new company are still being finalized. He noted that serious discussions could only commence after Paramount’s anti-trust settlement just a few days prior, explaining why he couldn't address every question immediately. This transparency underscores the complex transition period CNN is navigating.
