The Federal Government of Nigeria has formally endorsed the Meet Africa Fashion Festival (MAFEST) 2026, pledging institutional support for the successful hosting of the continental fashion event in Nigeria. This significant presidential endorsement was officially conveyed to Mr. Charles Ozoemena, the President and Convener of MAFEST, through a letter dated March 2, 2026. The correspondence was signed by Ifiok Abia, the Director overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Political and Economic Affairs Office, on behalf of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.

The Federal Government acknowledged the festival's strategic importance, recognizing its strong alignment with Nigeria's broader economic and cultural development objectives. The SGF, after careful consideration, commended the initiative, specifically highlighting its objectives to promote Africa's creativity, innovation, and the substantial economic potential of the fashion and textile industry within the country. To ensure effective participation and seamless coordination, the SGF designated the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy as the lead coordinating ministry for MAFEST 2026. This ministry is tasked with collaborating with other relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) within the scope of their statutory responsibilities to facilitate comprehensive collaboration and participation. Furthermore, the SGF advised the festival organisers to work closely with the lead ministry to coordinate engagements with federal agencies and authorities of the Federal Capital Territory, adhering strictly to established government procedures.

MAFEST is envisioned as a pan-African creative economy platform dedicated to showcasing indigenous African creativity and firmly positioning the continent as a global fashion powerhouse. The festival's ambitious goals include bridging the entire cotton, textile, and garment value chain, while simultaneously promoting eco-conscious and sustainable fashion practices across Africa. This four-day event is expected to draw a diverse array of participants, including designers, investors, cultural diplomats, policymakers, and media representatives from more than 20 African countries, fostering a truly continental gathering.
