Major African Fashion Festival Gets Official Endorsement for 2026 Event
The Federal Government of Nigeria has formally endorsed the Meet Africa Fashion Festival (MAFEST) 2026, pledging institutional support for the successful hosting of the continental fashion event in Nigeria. This significant presidential endorsement was officially conveyed to Mr. Charles Ozoemena, the President and Convener of MAFEST, through a letter dated March 2, 2026. The correspondence was signed by Ifiok Abia, the Director overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Political and Economic Affairs Office, on behalf of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.
The Federal Government acknowledged the festival's strategic importance, recognizing its strong alignment with Nigeria's broader economic and cultural development objectives. The SGF, after careful consideration, commended the initiative, specifically highlighting its objectives to promote Africa's creativity, innovation, and the substantial economic potential of the fashion and textile industry within the country. This endorsement underscores the government's commitment to fostering growth in this vital sector.
To ensure effective participation and seamless coordination, the SGF designated the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy as the lead coordinating ministry for MAFEST 2026. This ministry is tasked with collaborating with other relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) within the scope of their statutory responsibilities to facilitate comprehensive collaboration and participation. Furthermore, the SGF advised the festival organisers to work closely with the lead ministry to coordinate engagements with federal agencies and authorities of the Federal Capital Territory, adhering strictly to established government procedures.
MAFEST is envisioned as a pan-African creative economy platform dedicated to showcasing indigenous African creativity and firmly positioning the continent as a global fashion powerhouse. The festival's ambitious goals include bridging the entire cotton, textile, and garment value chain, while simultaneously promoting eco-conscious and sustainable fashion practices across Africa. Organisers articulate that this platform serves as a powerful driver for industrial growth, trade expansion, robust job creation, and significant youth empowerment throughout the continent.
The 2026 edition of the festival is themed "Take Your Place Africa!", a compelling call to action encouraging Africans across all borders to assert a stronger and more prominent position within the global creative and economic landscape. This four-day event is expected to draw a diverse array of participants, including designers, investors, cultural diplomats, policymakers, and media representatives from more than 20 African countries, fostering a truly continental gathering.
A rich array of activities is meticulously planned for the festival, designed to engage and inspire. These include elaborate exhibitions, captivating runway showcases of African fashion, crucial business networking sessions, and high-level engagements focused on strengthening Africa's burgeoning fashion and creative industries. Additional scheduled events comprise a continental conference, insightful masterclasses and workshops, strategic investment roundtables, and a spectacular gala night grand finale, all celebrating Africa's profound fashion heritage and immense manufacturing potential.
MAFEST also benefits from the strong support of various local and international partners. These include prominent entities such as Modela Couture Lagos, Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Africa, Europe and the UK South, the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, StyleAfrique Ghana, and the Federal Ministry of Environment, highlighting a collaborative effort.
With the formal backing of the Federal Government, organisers anticipate that MAFEST 2026 will significantly reinforce Nigeria's position as a leading hub for Africa's fashion and creative economy. Beyond this, the festival is poised to promote greater continental collaboration and enhance global visibility for African designers and brands, further solidifying Africa's presence on the international fashion stage.
