Maiduguri Under Siege: Deadly Bombings Spark Outrage, Calls for Resignation as VP Visits Scene

Northeastern Nigeria was recently struck by a heinous terrorist attack, with coordinated suicide bombings occurring in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on March 16, 2026. These tragic incidents reportedly claimed the lives of at least 23 people and left over 100 others injured, sending shockwaves through the community and drawing widespread condemnation from various national and international bodies.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Youssouf, strongly condemned the attacks, emphasizing that such acts constitute a grave violation of human rights and profoundly undermine peace, security, and stability within communities. In a statement issued on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, by his spokesperson, Nuur Mohamud Sheekh, the AU expressed full solidarity with the Federal Republic of Nigeria, describing the bombings as part of a continuing pattern of violence by terrorist and extremist groups targeting civilians and security personnel. The African Union extended its deepest condolences to the victims' families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured, while reiterating its unequivocal rejection and firm condemnation of all forms of violence perpetrated by terrorist elements.
The AU Chairperson also commended the sustained efforts of the Nigerian and Borno State authorities in countering terrorism and improving security conditions, particularly in Maiduguri and its environs. However, the incident underscored the persistent threat posed by terrorism and the need for continued vigilance. Amid growing concerns over insecurity in the Lake Chad Basin, Youssouf called on the international community to intensify support for Nigeria and neighboring countries. This support, he stressed, should include enhanced humanitarian assistance, capacity-building, intelligence-sharing, and sustained investment in stabilization and development initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of violent extremism. The African Union reaffirmed that only through a "whole-of-society, collective security and action approach, strengthened cooperation, and sustained commitment" can the threat of terrorism be effectively defeated and lasting peace secured.
In response to the tragic events, Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in Maiduguri on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, for an on-the-spot assessment and condolence visit. Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Vice President was received at the Maiduguri International Airport by top government officials, including Borno State Deputy Governor Umar Usman Kadafur and Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, among others. His visit highlighted the Federal Government's concern following the coordinated attacks that exposed fresh security lapses in the insurgency-ravaged North-East region.
The bombings, suspected to have been carried out by suicide bombers, struck multiple high-profile locations across Maiduguri around 7:24 pm on Monday, March 16, 2026. Targeted areas included the bustling Monday Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover, throwing residents into panic during the Ramadan iftar period. The Borno State Police Command confirmed the casualty figures of 23 dead and 108 injured, with police spokesperson ASP Nahum Daso stating that security agencies swiftly secured the affected locations, deployed explosive ordnance teams, and evacuated victims to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, also visited Borno State on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, meeting with victims and expressing his deep sympathy. The Deputy Governor of Borno State, Usman Umar Kadafur, welcomed the IGP, congratulating him on his appointment and praising his swift response to the attack as a "sign of seriousness" and a morale booster for the state's residents. Despite official assurances that normalcy had been restored, these incidents once again highlighted the fragile security situation in Borno State, years after the Nigerian government repeatedly claimed to have technically defeated insurgents.
Adding to the criticism, the African Action Congress (AAC) called for the immediate resignation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (Rtd.), in a press statement issued on March 18, 2026. Signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rex I. Elanu, the party described the incident as a "horrifying tragedy" and a clear indication of the Nigerian government’s failure to safeguard its citizens. While expressing condolences, the AAC stressed the necessity to move beyond mourning and confront what it termed systemic governance failures, attributing repeated attacks across the country to a collapsed system and ineffective leadership.
The AAC further accused the government of prioritizing political control and suppressing dissent over addressing the nation’s worsening security challenges. It criticized calls for patience, arguing that insecurity and economic hardship continued to escalate despite official assurances. Warning that continued reliance on existing political structures, including the 2027 general elections, would not yield meaningful change, the party urged Nigerians to organize at community and grassroots levels to demand accountability and resist oppressive governance. The AAC encouraged sustained civic action, emphasizing that meaningful transformation would require organized and persistent pressure beyond electoral participation.
