LL COOL J's 'NCIS' Spin-Off Teases Epic 'Los Angeles' Reunion!

CBS has officially ordered the new spin-off, NCIS: New York, providing LL COOL J's special agent Sam Hanna with a permanent new home within the NCIS universe. This move follows Hanna's appearances in the flagship series since the conclusion of NCIS: Los Angeles in 2023, marking a welcome return to the Big Apple for both the character and the actor. The new series will see Hanna partner with a roguish agent portrayed by Hawaii Five-0 alum Scott Caan.
The launch of a new NCIS branch focused on crimes in one of the world's busiest port cities has sparked speculation about potential visits from former colleagues. Specifically, fans are wondering if Chris O'Donnell's Agent Grisha Callen might make an appearance. While a fresh start in New York places Hanna on the other side of the country from Los Angeles, the possibility of an old Office of Special Projects member dropping by remains open.
Speaking to Collider's Michael Zimmermann, Chris O'Donnell, who is currently focused on his new procedural, 9-1-1: Nashville, did not rule out the idea of Callen making a guest appearance. O'Donnell expressed his willingness to work with LL COOL J again, stating, "Any opportunity to spend time with Todd is something I would do." He also conveyed his confidence in the upcoming show, believing it will be a "terrific" venture for his co-star, especially given LL COOL J's New York roots. In the NCIS: Los Angeles series finale, Callen married Anna with Sam Hanna as his best man, before embarking on a new adventure alongside Sam, Nell, and other familiar faces.
Behind the scenes, NCIS: New York is bringing back some Los Angeles talent. R. Scott Gemmill, known for penning all 14 seasons of the California-based spin-off, is writing the pilot for the new series. Kingdom creator Byron Balasco has been tapped to serve as showrunner. Details regarding other members of Sam's new team are yet to be announced, with the fall premiere still some time away.
Meanwhile, Chris O'Donnell will be kept busy with the second season of 9-1-1: Nashville. The Tennessee-based spin-off of Ryan Murphy's hit procedural, which premiered last fall, secured a Season 2 renewal. The show centers on O'Donnell's firefighting veteran, Captain Don Hart, as he leads the 113 alongside his son, Ryan, played by Michael Provost, creating a family-focused dynamic.
O'Donnell shared his excitement about the renewal with Collider's Maggie Lovitt, expressing anticipation for further developing the character dynamics. He noted that it takes time for new shows to find their footing, for characters to develop their voices, and for writers to understand the intricate relationships within the cast. He looks forward to continuing this process and defining the show's unique identity, distinct from its predecessor.
NCIS: New York is scheduled to premiere in the 9 p.m. slot on Tuesdays this fall on CBS. 9-1-1: Nashville will return to its 9 p.m. slot on Thursdays on ABC. Further updates on both shows are expected as the fall broadcast schedule approaches.
