Clooney and Kimmel Unite Against Trump's Fury Over 'Expectant Widow' Joke

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel found himself at the center of a political firestorm after a joke made about First Lady Melania Trump sparked outrage from former President Donald Trump and Melania herself, leading to demands for Kimmel's dismissal from Disney and ABC. The controversy originated from an April 23 episode of 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!', which featured a mock White House Correspondents Dinner sketch. During this segment, Kimmel quipped that Melania Trump had the 'glow of an expectant widow', a remark that ignited significant backlash days later, particularly after the actual White House Correspondents Dinner on April 25 was abruptly halted due to a shooter incident.

Donald Trump, expressing his indignation on Truth Social, condemned Kimmel's statement as 'really shocking' and inaccurately claimed Kimmel showed a 'fake video' of Melania and Barron. Trump misquoted the joke, stating Kimmel said, 'Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.' He then explicitly linked Kimmel’s joke to the subsequent security scare, where a suspected shooter, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, was charged with attempting to assassinate Donald Trump. Trump declared that 'so many people are incensed by Kimmel’s despicable call to violence,' and demanded Kimmel 'be immediately fired by Disney and ABC.'

Melania Trump echoed her husband's sentiments, posting on X that 'Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn’t comedy — his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America.' She further asserted that 'people like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate,' accusing Kimmel of hiding behind ABC and calling for the network's leadership to 'take a stand' against his 'atrocious behavior.'

In response to the escalating criticism, Kimmel addressed the controversy on a subsequent episode of 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!', humorously opening with, 'You know how sometimes you wake up in the morning and the First Lady puts out a statement demanding you be fired from your job? We’ve all been there. Right?' He clarified that his 'expectant widow' jab was 'a joke about their age difference and the look of joy we see on [Melania’s] face' when she is with the President. Kimmel emphatically stated it was 'by no means a call for violence,' and was 'a very light roast joke' about Trump being nearly 80. He also used the opportunity to advocate against gun violence and suggested that for rhetoric to be dialed back, a conversation should be had with Trump himself.

Amidst the calls for Kimmel's firing, actor George Clooney publicly defended the late-night host. Speaking at the 51st Chaplin Award Gala, Clooney compared the backlash against Kimmel's joke to another pre-dinner remark made by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who told Fox News there would be 'some shots fired tonight in the room,' presumably referring to jokes. Clooney argued, 'Jimmy’s a comedian, and I would argue that Karoline Leavitt didn’t mean shots should be fired. She was making a joke. Fair enough. You look at that side and go, ’Well, jokes are jokes.’'
