Bachelorette Shocker: ABC Pulls Show After Taylor Frankie Paul Scandal Erupts

ABC has announced the indefinite postponement of Season 22 of “The Bachelorette,” which was originally scheduled to premiere on Sunday, March 22. This decision stems from the escalating controversy surrounding its star, Taylor Frankie Paul, and her tumultuous relationship with ex-partner Dakota Mortensen. Disney Entertainment Television issued a statement confirming the show’s pause, citing a newly released video and their commitment to supporting the family involved, with the network yet to confirm if or when the season might air.
Taylor Frankie Paul's spokesperson released a statement expressing her gratitude for ABC’s support as she prioritizes the safety and security of her family. The statement detailed Paul’s years of silently enduring extensive mental and physical abuse, alongside threats of retaliation, and her newfound strength to confront her alleged abuser. It also underscored the plight of many women who suffer in silence from aggressive ex-partners. Paul, who gained public recognition through Hulu’s “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” has a documented history of domestic disputes, notably her arrest in 2023 following an altercation with Mortensen.
The 2023 incident, which was depicted in the Season 1 premiere of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” involved Paul allegedly throwing a chair at her partner, which subsequently struck her daughter. She pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault, while additional charges, including child abuse, criminal mischief, and domestic violence in the presence of a child, were dismissed. More recently, in a separate development, Hulu halted production on Season 5 of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” due to a new domestic violence investigation. This investigation, initiated by the Draper City Police Department in Utah after a call from Mortensen’s roommate, is looking into allegations made by both Paul and Mortensen regarding an incident in late February.
Despite these unfolding events, Paul spent the preceding week promoting “The Bachelorette,” participating in various interviews at a press dinner in New York and appearing on programs such as “Good Morning America” and “Live With Kelly and Mark.” During these appearances, she affirmed her commitment to speaking her truth and prioritizing her children, acknowledging the immense stress of balancing personal turmoil with public visibility. She confided to People magazine at an event that her heart ached from the experience, finding the timing particularly challenging and noting that she had never fully enjoyed past premieres due to similar difficulties.
The critical turning point occurred on Thursday morning when TMZ obtained and published video evidence of the 2023 altercation. The footage graphically depicted Paul throwing bar stools and kicking her ex-boyfriend while her daughter was present in the room. Just hours after the video's release, ABC made the immediate decision to pull “The Bachelorette” from its schedule, leaving its future uncertain.
The abrupt pre-emption of the show carries significant financial implications for ABC, potentially costing tens of millions of dollars in license fees to Warner Bros. Unscripted TV, marketing expenses, and other lost revenue. Warner Bros., which distributes the show internationally and holds the license, was reportedly shocked by the video but not entirely surprised by the turn of events, given Paul's well-known history of domestic violence, which was documented at the very outset of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.” Sources revealed that Warner Bros. had initial concerns about casting Paul, but ultimately acquiesced after ABC emphasized the importance of Paul and the “Mormon Wives” franchise to the network. Warner Bros. executives are currently adopting a wait-and-see approach while maintaining communication with ABC, as the studio receives its license fee regardless of whether the show airs.
Ironically, this season of “The Bachelorette” was intended to be a reboot for the franchise, which had not aired since summer 2024 and had undergone internal shifts, including showrunner changes and reports of a
