Knicks Land Star Center: Andre Drummond Inks Deal!
The New York Knicks have signed veteran center Andre Drummond to a one-year, $3.9 million contract following Mitchell Robinson's departure. Drummond, a renowned rebounder, is expected to provide similar contributions to the team as he steps in to back up Karl-Anthony Towns. He expressed readiness and commitment to the Knicks' expectations.
The New York Knicks have officially secured veteran center Andre Drummond, agreeing to a one-year, $3.9 million contract. This significant acquisition comes after the departure of former Knicks backup center Mitchell Robinson, who signed a three-year, $47.4 million deal with the Boston Celtics. Robinson's move was anticipated following Knicks chairman James Dolan's firm stance against exceeding the punitive luxury tax second apron.
Drummond is expected to fill the void left by Robinson, as his on-court production, particularly his exceptional rebounding ability, mirrors what Robinson provided the Knicks. Throughout his career, Drummond has demonstrated remarkable prowess on the boards. As a member of the Detroit Pistons, he notably led the NBA in offensive rebounds per game for seven consecutive seasons and was the league's top rebounder four times between the 2015-16 season and from 2017 to 2020.
In recent years, Drummond has played for several prominent teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers, Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls, and Philadelphia 76ers. Over the past two seasons, he served as a reliable backup to Joel Embiid in Philadelphia, where he averaged 6.8 points and 8.2 rebounds in 19.2 minutes across 103 games, starting 48 of them. Expressing gratitude for his time in Philadelphia, Drummond shared on social media, "Philly will always have a special place in my heart. Nothing but love and gratitude as I move into the next chapter."
With the Knicks, Drummond will now serve as the primary backup to Karl-Anthony Towns. He is tasked with providing the same integral offensive rebounding and defensive contributions that Mitchell Robinson brought to the team. A two-time All-Star, Drummond boasts career averages of 12.1 points and 11.9 rebounds per game over 14 seasons. His most impressive season came in 2017-18, where he averaged 15.0 points, 16.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.6 blocks, and 1.5 steals per game. Addressing the Knicks fanbase, Drummond concluded his social media post with a commitment: "To the Knicks fans, I know what this city expects, and I'm ready to embrace it. I'm coming in with gratitude, hunger, and a mindset to work. Let's make this chapter special."
