Kenya's ODM Rift Explodes: Linda Mwananchi Faction Roars, Challenging Party Loyalty

The political landscape in Kenya is witnessing a significant upheaval within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as the scramble to inherit the political empire of the late ODM leader Raila Odinga intensifies. This battle has given rise to a new faction, the Linda Mwananchi movement, which is fiercely competing with the Linda Ground faction, leading to widening fissures within the party and threatening to scatter the crucial Nyanza vote across various political camps.
The Linda Mwananchi faction has escalated its political activities, recently holding rallies in Luanda, Vihiga County, on April 25, 2026, and planning their first rally in Kisumu. During these gatherings, the faction made bold declarations, including the anointing of Siaya Governor James Orengo as the Acting ODM Party leader. Furthermore, leaders of the Linda Mwananchi movement have vowed to produce a presidential candidate to challenge and unseat President William Ruto in the upcoming 2027 general election, stating their intent to form the next government.
Among the key figures championing the Linda Mwananchi cause is Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, whose bid for governor next year is being actively supported by the movement. Leaders allied to the faction, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, and Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, have emphasized their commitment to pushing for better governance and accountability. They have also unequivocally condemned the recent attack on Senator Osotsi, vowing not to be intimidated in their political endeavors.
Senator Osotsi recounted a harrowing experience of being assaulted by a group of youths in Kisumu, an incident he believes was triggered by his political stance, specifically his support for "one term" and for Senator Edwin Sifuna. CCTV footage captured approximately 20 young men surrounding and beating the senator at a Java House restaurant, after questioning his political position. He was subsequently airlifted to Nairobi for specialized medical attention. Osotsi also accused certain ODM leaders of sidelining and mistreating him, stating, "While we were in ODM, they used to oppress Sifuna, and I refused. I said I would stand with my brother…Because of that stand, they have now sent goons to kill me."
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna condemned the attack on Osotsi, highlighting a broader concern over the deteriorating security situation in the country. "What pains us most is not Osotsi alone. The security situation in our country has deteriorated badly, and we condemn those who sent criminals to attack Honorable Osotsi," Sifuna stated, reaffirming the faction's resolve: "But one thing we are saying is that we will not be cowed." Adding to the discourse, Siaya Governor James Orengo attributed Kenya's challenges to the country’s top leadership and called for President William Ruto's immediate removal, suggesting citizens should not wait until the 2027 elections. The campaign trail, which passed through Shamakhokho market, Majengo Market, and Luanda town, is set to continue its momentum in Kisumu.
