Janet Jackson Joins Elite Club: Cardi B Fuels Historic 5-Decade Hot 100 Milestone!

Music icon Janet Jackson has significantly extended her impressive Billboard Hot 100 chart presence, now spanning five distinct decades. This monumental achievement comes with her feature on Cardi B's track, “Principal,” which debuted at No. 92 on the chart dated October 4. Jackson now stands alongside Cher and Madonna as the only women to achieve new Hot 100 entries in five separate decades, a testament to her enduring influence in the music industry.

“Principal” marks Jackson’s first appearance on the Hot 100 since her 2018 collaboration “Made for Now” with Daddy Yankee, solidifying her charting presence in every decade since the 1980s. The song's debut performance is largely attributed to 4.9 million official streams in the United States during the September 19-25 tracking week, according to Luminate. It also received a notable boost from 1,000 sales downloads and 725,000 radio audience impressions. The Cardi B-Jackson collaboration is featured on Cardi B’s latest album, “Am I the Drama?,” which simultaneously launched at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

For pop music aficionados, “Principal” incorporates a recognizable sample from Jackson’s classic hit “The Pleasure Principle.” This original track from her seminal “Control” album peaked at No. 14 in August 1987, famously supported by its iconic music video featuring a well-remembered dance routine that earned an MTV Video Music Award for best choreography in 1988.

Janet Jackson, the youngest child of Joseph and Katherine Jackson, first entered the Hot 100 in December 1982 with “Young Love,” which reached a respectable No. 64 the following month. After initial success as an actress, she transitioned into music, releasing her self-titled debut LP in 1982, followed by “Dream Street” in 1984. While these early efforts saw modest commercial returns, her career trajectory exploded with her third album, 1986's “Control.” This groundbreaking record topped the Billboard 200 and generated six top 20 Hot 100 singles, including “The Pleasure Principle” and her first of ten No. 1 hits, “When I Think of You.”

Jackson's illustrious career includes a total of 42 Hot 100 entries. A breakdown of these hits by their chart debut decade reveals: 10 in the 1980s, 19 in the 1990s, 10 in the 2000s, 2 in the 2010s, and now 1 in the 2020s. This latest achievement places her alongside Cher, whose chart presence spans six decades (1960s-2000s and 2020s), and Madonna, who shares Jackson’s 1980s-2020s run with new material. While Brenda Lee has also appeared on the Hot 100 in five distinct decades, her presence is not solely due to new recordings across all entries, with her holiday classic “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” frequently re-entering the charts since 2014.
