Tottenham's £60m Gamble: Forest Threatens Legal Action Amid Gibbs-White Medical

Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White is at the center of a high-stakes transfer saga, with Tottenham Hotspur poised to trigger his reported £60 million release clause. Well-placed sources indicate that the 25-year-old is scheduled for a medical at Tottenham on Friday, with the formalities of his move expected to accelerate within 24 hours.
However, the proposed transfer faces significant contention as Nottingham Forest are reportedly considering legal action against Tottenham's conduct. Sources close to the situation reveal that Forest believes a specific confidentiality agreement within Gibbs-White's £60 million release clause may have been breached. Forest officials are said to be furious, insisting they have not granted Tottenham permission to engage in discussions with their contracted player. They are reportedly prepared to go to "whatever lengths required to prevent the transfer taking place," citing Premier League rules that prohibit clubs from speaking to players under contract without explicit permission. Tottenham, while aware of Forest's stance, remains optimistic about concluding the deal.
Gibbs-White, who possesses four England caps, has been a standout performer, registering seven goals and eight assists in 34 Premier League appearances last season. His impressive form had previously attracted interest from several top English clubs, including Manchester City, though Pep Guardiola's side has since cooled their pursuit. Tottenham has now significantly intensified its efforts to secure his signature.
The midfielder originally joined Nottingham Forest from Wolves in August 2022 in a deal valued up to £42.5 million, signing a five-year contract. During his three years at the City Ground, Gibbs-White has made 118 appearances, contributing 18 goals and providing 28 assists. His England debut came as a substitute under interim manager Lee Carsley in a Nations League fixture against the Republic of Ireland in September. His most recent international appearance was also from the bench in a 3-1 friendly defeat to Senegal at the City Ground, notably under new boss Thomas Tuchel.
This potential move for Gibbs-White follows another significant departure from Nottingham Forest, with his teammate Anthony Elanga agreeing to a £55 million transfer to Newcastle earlier this week. Meanwhile, Tottenham, under new head coach Thomas Frank appointed last month, has already been active in the transfer market, securing Mohammed Kudus from West Ham for £55 million and expressing interest in Brentford attacker Yoane Wissa.
