James Gunn's Superman Sequel Casts Brainiac: Who's the New Villain?

Director James Gunn has officially announced that German actor Lars Eidinger will portray Brainiac, the primary antagonist in the highly anticipated Superman follow-up, Man of Tomorrow. This marks Brainiac's inaugural big-screen appearance, a significant event for DC fans. Gunn welcomed Eidinger to the DCU via social media, stating that Eidinger emerged as the top choice during their extensive search for an actor to embody the iconic computerized villain.
Lars Eidinger is a distinguished figure in German cinema and television, having gained international recognition through the Kristen Stewart drama Clouds of Sils Maria. His notable filmography includes appearances in High Life and Dumbo, as well as roles in television series such as Babylon Berlin, Irma Vep, and All the Light We Cannot See. More recently, he has featured in Noah Baumbach's films White Noise and Jay Kelly.
Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release on July 9, 2027, is described by Gunn as a follow-up to last summer's Superman, though he clarifies it is not a direct sequel. David Corenswet will reprise his role as Superman, and Nicholas Hoult will return as Lex Luthor. However, the narrative will see Superman and Lex Luthor reluctantly forming an alliance to confront a common threat, now confirmed to be Brainiac. Gunn emphasizes that the film is as much about Lex Luthor as it is about Superman, suggesting that Luthor might also be vying for the mantle of the titular "man of tomorrow," a sobriquet traditionally associated with Superman.
The film will also see the return of several members of the Justice Gang from Superman. This includes Green Lantern Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion; Mr. Terrific, portrayed by Edi Gathegi; Hawkgirl, played by Isabela Merced; and Metamorpho, brought to life by Anthony Carrigan, all slated to appear in some capacity.
While there is a considerable wait for Man of Tomorrow, James Gunn's new cinematic DC Universe has an array of projects slated for 2026. Audiences can look forward to the big-screen releases of Supergirl in the summer and Clayface in the fall. Additionally, Lanterns, a fresh interpretation of the Green Lantern Corps mythos, is set to debut on HBO later the same year. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates regarding these exciting DCU developments.
