Italy Cracks Down: Nine Arrested in Major Hamas Funding Scandal

Italian police have carried out a significant counter-terrorism operation, arresting nine individuals accused of orchestrating a complex fundraising system that allegedly channeled approximately €7 million (£6 million) to the militant group Hamas over a period of more than two years. The funds, which were ostensibly collected as humanitarian aid intended for Palestinian civilians, were instead reportedly diverted to support Hamas's military wing and provide financial assistance to the families of suicide bombers or those detained for terrorism-related activities.
The comprehensive investigation, a joint effort between Italy's counter-terror police and financial police, commenced following the 7 October 2023 Hamas attack in southern Israel. Investigators meticulously analyzed a series of suspicious financial transactions involving some of the suspects, which were observed in the lead-up to the attack. This scrutiny ultimately uncovered a sophisticated fundraising network headquartered in Genoa, with additional operational branches established in Milan.
Authorities have stated that their findings indicate a substantial portion of the collected donations, specifically over 71% of these funds, was illicitly redirected to Hamas's coffers. In conjunction with the arrests, police have also seized a considerable sum, more than €8 million (£7 million) in assets, as part of their ongoing efforts to disrupt the alleged terrorist financing operations.
Among the arrested suspects, Mohammad Hannoun, the president of the Palestinian Association in Italy, has been identified as the most well-known figure. Mr. Hannoun has previously publicly denied any allegations linking him to Hamas financing, describing such claims as a 'lie.' Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi lauded the police for their diligent work, while also emphasizing the importance of recognizing the presumption of innocence for all individuals at this stage of the legal process.
