Iconic Twitter Bird Logo and Memorabilia Hit Auction Block by Elon Musk

Elon Musk has reportedly decided to part ways with the iconic Twitter bird logo and various Twitter-related memorabilia and office equipment through an extensive online auction scheduled for next month. This strategic move comes just weeks after the significant rebranding of the Twitter company to X, which involved a complete overhaul of the company's logo and its entire operational focus. The upcoming auction is aptly titled “Twitter Rebranding: Online Auction Featuring Memorabilia, Art, Office Assets & More!” and promises to offer a unique collection of items.
The auction features a substantial offering of 584 lots, providing a wide array of items for potential buyers. Among the most distinctive pieces are a Twitter bird coffee table and an outsized bird cage sofa, directly embodying the platform's former identity. Beyond these iconic collectibles, the sale includes practical office essentials such as various furniture items (stools, tables, chairs, sofas), and a range of appliances including refrigerators, dispensers, grinders, and espresso machines. Additionally, tens of desks and chairs are listed, catering to broader demands for office furnishings.
Adding an intriguing dimension to the auction, musical equipment is also on offer, featuring guitars, drum kits, amplifiers, and a complete DJ booth equipped with a controller, mixers, and speakers. More overtly branded items, like a neon Twitter logo and a hashtag sign, are also part of the lots. Notably, the iconic Twitter bird logo, which is still physically mounted on the building’s side, is available for purchase. However, the listing explicitly states that the buyer will be responsible for hiring a licensed San Francisco company with the appropriate permits for its safe removal.
The auction also includes a fascinating collection of artworks, specifically oil paintings depicting famous individuals and celebrities based on their viral posts. These unique art pieces include a representation of the memorable 2014 Oscars Ellen DeGeneres Selfie and a captivating Photo Mosaic constructed from Celebrity Tribute Tweets. Another significant item is a picture of the tweet made by then-US President Barack Obama upon his re-election in November 2012, a post that earned the distinction of being the most-liked tweet on the platform at that time.
According to the auction house, Heritage Global Partners, the opening bid for each lot is set at $25 (equivalent to approximately £19.70). Buyers should also be aware of a 19% buyer’s premium and an 8.63% sales tax that will be applied. The bidding for this online auction is scheduled to commence on September 12th and will run for a duration of two days, concluding on September 14th.
This upcoming auction is not the first of its kind for the company. In January, Twitter previously held an online auction that lasted only 27 hours, featuring over 600 lots that ranged from basic office supplies to specific Twitter memorabilia. While that earlier auction saw significantly higher bidding prices, with some items fetching up to $22,000, it likely served as an initial phase in the company's efforts to divest its older assets.
Since Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company in 2022, it has faced considerable financial challenges. This period has been characterized by extensive employee layoffs, significant changes to its operating system, and a concerted drive to cut costs and boost revenue. The company has also been embroiled in various lawsuits, including disputes over office rent payments. While it remains uncertain if this will be the final auction to clear out the company’s “old stuff,” it is evident that with the rebranding to X, Elon Musk is determined to remove all traces and memories associated with the former identity and representation of Twitter.
