Honda Pulls the Plug: Three EV Models Axed in the U.S. Market!

Honda has announced the cancellation of three electric vehicles (EVs) previously slated for production and launch in the U.S. market. This decision comes as a direct response to a significant decline in EV demand and projected financial losses, signaling a crucial shift in the automaker's strategy for North America.

The vehicles in question include the 0 Series SUV, the funky 0 Series sedan, and the Acura RSX, all of which were nearing production readiness, having been showcased by Honda at CES the previous year. These models were particularly significant as they represented Honda's first in-house developed EVs specifically for the American market. Prior EV offerings in the U.S., such as the Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX, were collaborations with General Motors.

The cancellation also impacts Honda's manufacturing plans. The first generation of the 0 Series was intended to be produced at the retooled Marysville plant in Ohio, with production initially set to commence this year. Furthermore, earlier plans for the next generation of 0 Series vehicles, including a new plant in Canada and a battery plant addition in Alliston, Ontario, had already been put on hold, indicating a broader reassessment of its EV roadmap.

Honda cited substantial financial concerns, attributing potential further losses to current market conditions. The company stated that launching these three new EV models amidst significantly declining demand would likely result in long-term financial burdens. Beyond the waning interest in EVs, Honda also highlighted losses stemming from tariffs and a slowdown in sales across Asia, particularly in China. The financial impact of these write-downs is expected to lead to an operating loss as high as $15.8 billion and year-end losses ranging from $5.1 billion to $7 billion for the fiscal year ending March 31, extending into the next fiscal year, according to CEO Toshihiro Mibe.

In light of this strategic review, Honda is now re-focusing its efforts on hybrid technology, an area where the company possesses considerable expertise. The automaker has outlined plans for a comprehensive overhaul of its hybrid lineup, encompassing new platforms, drive units, four-cylinder and V-6 engines, advanced electric hardware, and improved battery packs. The first of these next-generation hybrid models are anticipated to debut in 2027. Additionally, Honda is exploring the possibility of repurposing its battery plant production for hybrids instead of pure EVs, and even converting some capacity to storage batteries, mirroring a trend observed among other major automotive manufacturers.
