Heavy rainfall warning for state till July 17

Kochi: IMD issued a heavy rainfall warning for Kerala until July 17. Nine districts —Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod — are on yellow alert on Saturday.

Strong surface winds with speeds reaching 40-50kmph are likely to prevail occasionally over Kerala and Lakshadweep until Tuesday.A yellow alert has been issued for Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on Sunday. Seven districts — Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod — are on yellow alert on Monday and Tuesday.Squally weather with wind speeds of 40-50kmph, gusting to 60kmph, is likely to prevail over many parts of the east-central Arabian Sea and a few southern parts of the north Arabian Sea, northern parts of the south Arabian Sea, over some parts of the west-central and adjoining parts of the southwest Bay of Bengal and some southern parts of the south Bay of Bengal.IMD said that the low-pressure area over south Jharkhand and its neighbourhood became less marked. However, the associated cyclonic circulation persisted over the same area and extended up to 5.8km above mean sea level. The cyclonic circulation over south Jharkhand and its neighbourhood now lies over north Chhattisgarh and its neighbourhood and extends up to 5.8km above mean sea level.According to the 24-hour rainfall recorded on Friday morning, Bayar recorded 9cm, while Peringome got 8cm, and Vellanikkara, Kudulu, Chemberi and Muliyar received 7cm.

Kannur, Hosdurg, Cheruvanchery, Ayyankunnu and Padannakkad got 6cm.In its extended forecast for the fortnight, the IMD said that above-normal rainfall is likely for the state until July 23. Strong surface winds with speeds of 40-50kmph are very likely over Kerala, Mahe and Lakshadweep during this period. In its agri-advisory, it said that heavy rainfall may damage the standing crops and vegetables in the maturity stage. It advised postponing the sowing of seeds; if already sown, avoid water stagnation in the field and cover the seeded area with natural mulching materials like straw and farm residues.
