Heavy Rain Warning Issued for Kerala Until July 16

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant heavy rainfall warning for the state of Kerala, effective until July 16. This advisory includes a series of yellow alerts across various districts, indicating the potential for isolated heavy downpours.

For Saturday, a yellow alert has been specifically issued for the districts of Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Looking ahead to Sunday, the alert expands to include Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. On Monday, the yellow alert will remain active for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts.

In addition to the rainfall, strong surface winds are anticipated to prevail occasionally over Kerala and Lakshadweep until Saturday. These winds are expected to reach speeds of 40-50 kilometers per hour. The meteorological conditions are influenced by a low-pressure area, which was previously over Gangetic West Bengal and has now shifted over south Jharkhand. This low-pressure system is associated with a cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 kilometers above mean sea level.

Maritime areas are also under warning, with squally wind speeds reaching 45-55 kmph, and gusts up to 65 kmph, likely to affect several parts of the west-central Arabian Sea and the southern parts of the northwest Arabian Sea. Furthermore, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (Incois) has issued a swell surge alert specifically for the Thiruvananthapuram coast, covering the stretch from Kappil to Pozhiyoor.

This swell surge forecast indicates the likelihood of swell waves ranging from 1.6 to 2 meters in height with a period of 14-17 seconds, expected until 2:30 AM on Monday. In light of these conditions, Incois has strongly advised that there is a possibility of surging waves along the coast. Consequently, boats operating in the affected areas should proceed with utmost vigilance, and all recreational activities near the coast should be undertaken with extreme caution and due care.
