Heartbreaking Loss: Black Midi Guitarist Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin Passes Away at 26 After Mental Health Battle

Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, the co-founding guitarist of the acclaimed English rock band Black Midi, has passed away at the age of 26 after a "long battle with his mental health." The somber news was conveyed through a statement released by his family, which was subsequently shared by Black Midi's label, Rough Trade Records, on Monday, January 12.
The family's heartfelt message stated, "A talented musician and a kind, loving man finally succumbed; despite all efforts. He will always be loved. Please take a moment to check in with your loved ones so we can stop this happening to our young men." Rough Trade Records also extended its deepest condolences, recognizing Kwasniewski-Kelvin as "an incredibly talented person who will be truly missed."
Black Midi first garnered significant attention in 2019, building a dedicated following through their energetic gigs at Windmill Brixton in London. Before the release of their debut album, Kwasniewski-Kelvin, alongside vocalist Geordie Greep, bassist Cameron Picton, and drummer Morgan Simpson, had already generated enough buzz to embark on tours across Europe and the United States.
The band's debut album, "Schlagenheim," was released in July 2019 via Rough Trade, introducing the world to Black Midi's distinctive blend of experimental rock. This was followed by "Cavalcade" in 2021 and "Hellfire" in 2022. "Hellfire" achieved notable success, peaking at No. 13 on Billboard's Top Alternative Albums chart and propelling Black Midi to the top of the Emerging Artists ranking.
However, Kwasniewski-Kelvin had already stepped back from the group by the time "Hellfire" was released, departing after the first album due to him feeling "mentally unwell," as he shared in a statement at the time. The band continued to be active until 2023, undertaking tours across the U.S., Asia, Europe, and Latin America before officially disbanding in 2024.
