Golden Rocker Revelation: Weezer's Rivers Cuomo Shocks Late Night Audience in Gold Paint

Weezer is ushering in what is being heralded as their 'golden era' with the release of their new self-titled album, also known as The Gold Album. The cherished rock band celebrated this milestone with a late-night performance on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, which aired on Wednesday, August 19, just prior to the album's release via Reprise/Warner Records.

Frontman Rivers Cuomo fully embraced the golden theme for the occasion. For the performance of “We Might as Well Be Strangers,” a track from The Gold Album, Cuomo was dressed head-to-toe in gold, featuring gold trousers, a jacket, a bow tie, and a top hat. His makeup further complemented the look, reminiscent of a confrontation with the iconic Bond villain Goldfinger. Cuomo maintained this character during a subsequent chat with Jimmy Fallon, alongside bandmate Patrick Wilson.

The band's creative resurgence follows a significant year in 2024, which saw them celebrating the 30th anniversary of their debut album with a major, sold-out tour, supported by The Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. Following this tour, Weezer reconvened in Orange County to focus on writing and recording new material. The production duties for The Gold Album were handled by Klas Ahlundand and Kenneth Blume, known as Kenny Beats, guiding the four-piece through their creative process.

Cuomo articulated the essence of the new LP to Fallon, stating, “What you hear on the record is something that could only be created by humans coming together and being vulnerable and creating something together. It just can’t be created by AI or a somebody on their own working on a computer or something.”

The Gold project, released on Friday, August 21, marks the seventh installment in Weezer’s distinctive color-coded series of self-titled albums and stands as their 16th studio album since their 1994 debut, Weezer (Blue Album). To support the new release, the band is embarking on the “Weezer: The Gathering” tour, which is scheduled to kick off in September with various stops across North America. Cuomo further explained the tour's concept, telling Fallon, “The gathering has something to do with summoning sorcerers from all corners of the world to come into this. And I think this tour is something like that. We’re summoning all the different kinds of Weezer fans from around the world to come rock out with us.”
