Ghana Secures Third Place in 2025 Unity Cup Against Trinidad & Tobago

Ghana's Black Stars delivered an exceptional performance to secure a convincing 4-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago's Soca Warriors in the third-place playoff of the Unity Cup 2025. The match, held at the GTech Community Stadium in London, saw Otto Addo's side build on their impressive second-half display against Nigeria in the semi-finals, where they had suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat. This victory marked a strong finish to their tournament campaign.
The Black Stars started strongly, making their dominance count early. Captain Jordan Ayew, who had faced public criticism from figures like actor Don Little regarding his performance and missed scoring chances in the semi-final loss to Nigeria, responded emphatically. Ayew opened the scoring just six minutes into the game with a well-taken curler from outside the box. Ghana continued to press, and in the 14th minute, Razak Simpson doubled their lead. Simpson, who himself had a challenging game against Nigeria, rose to head home a perfect corner delivered by Ayew, marking his first senior national team goal.
The first-half onslaught continued, and with about three minutes remaining before recess, Mohammed Fuseini added a third goal. A brilliant team move, started by Razak Simpson who found Caleb Yirenkyi, saw Yirenkyi slip the ball to Ayew. The captain then set up Fuseini, who coolly slotted home with his left foot, also scoring his debut goal for Ghana. The Black Stars went into halftime with a commanding 3-0 lead, showcasing a dominant first-half performance.
The scoring prowess was not limited to the first half. Close to the hour mark, Lawrence Agyekum made it 4-0, netting his first-ever goal for the Black Stars with a tidy finish inside the box, following an assist from left-back Gideon Mensah. It was an afternoon notable for several first-time scorers for the national team.
With a comfortable lead, Coach Otto Addo took the opportunity to give minutes to other squad members. A minute after the hour mark (around the 61st minute), three changes were made: Abdul Aziz Issah, a promising Barcelona youngster making his debut, Felix Afena-Gyan, returning to the national team for the first time since 2022, and Majeed Ashimeru came on to replace Lawrence Agyekum, Jordan Ayew, and Ibrahim Sulemana respectively. Later in the game, Salis Samed and Brandon Thomas Asante also received playing time, substituting Abu Francis and Mohammed Fuseini. Christopher Bonsu had attempts at goal but was unable to find the net for a debut goal. Afena-Gyan actively sought to make an impact, with one long-range effort going just inches wide.
This comprehensive 4-0 victory serves as a significant confidence booster for the Black Stars as they look ahead to crucial World Cup qualifying matches against Chad and Mali scheduled for September and October. Trinidad and Tobago, who had earlier lost their semi-final match 3-2 to Jamaica due to a late penalty, finished the tournament in fourth place. The Unity Cup 2025 final will feature Nigeria against Jamaica, battling for the trophy at the same London venue.
