Game of Thrones Star Kit Harington Mysteriously Joins Harry Potter as Gilderoy Lockhart!

Kit Harington, known for his role in “Game of Thrones,” has been cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in Season 2 of HBO’s “Harry Potter” series. This casting change comes after Nicholas Hoult exited the production due to scheduling conflicts. Harington is not new to the character, having recently voiced Lockhart in Audible’s “Harry Potter” audiobooks late last year, a role he enthusiastically accepted, calling it a “no-brainer” and “entertaining and fun to do as an actor.”

Gilderoy Lockhart is a pivotal character in the second book, “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” on which Season 2 of the series is based. He is introduced as a famous yet arrogant wizard renowned for his supposed heroic deeds. Lockhart takes on the role of the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, though his incompetence for the position soon becomes apparent. In the 2002 film adaptation of “Chamber of Secrets,” the character was memorably portrayed by Kenneth Branagh.

Harington, a self-proclaimed “Harry Potter” enthusiast, shared in December that he fell in love with J.K. Rowling’s books during his childhood and has reread them numerous times. His deep appreciation for the source material and the character of Lockhart was a key factor in his decision to join the project, initially for the audiobooks and now for the HBO series.

Season 2 of the highly anticipated “Harry Potter” series is scheduled to begin shooting this fall. Before that, fans can look forward to the premiere of the first season on Christmas Day, available on both HBO and HBO Max. The series aims to bring a faithful adaptation of Rowling’s beloved books to a new generation of viewers.

The cast for the series includes Dominic McLaughlin in the title role of Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton portraying Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, forming the iconic trio. Veteran actors also join the ensemble, with John Lithgow cast as Hogwarts headmaster Dumbledore and Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall. Paapa Essiedu is set to play Snape, while Nick Frost will embody the beloved Rubeus Hagrid, completing a formidable roster of characters.

Behind the scenes, the production team sees developments as well. Jon Brown, who served as a writer on the first season, has been promoted to co-showrunner for Season 2, joining current showrunner and series developer Francesca Gardiner. Gardiner also serves as an executive producer alongside director Mark Mylod. The creative vision is further supported by executive producers J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, as well as David Heyman of Heyday Films. Warner Bros. Television is the studio producing the ambitious adaptation.
