The Gambian Embassy in Washington has issued an urgent and severe warning to its citizens residing in the United States, following alarmingly high rates of visa overstays. The Embassy highlighted that 38% of Gambian students and 13% of B1/B2 visitors have overstayed their visas, figures that significantly exceed acceptable thresholds and have triggered heightened scrutiny from US authorities.

In a formal statement released on Tuesday, the Embassy underscored that overstaying one's visa constitutes a direct violation of US immigration law, which carries substantial and long-lasting ramifications. These severe consequences include, but are not limited to, the cancellation of current visas, rendering individuals ineligible for future US visas, potential deportation from the country, and the imposition of lengthy travel bans, which can extend up to ten years for overstays exceeding one year, and three years for overstays of 180 days or more.

The Embassy further elaborated on the collective impact of these individual actions, stating that such high overstay rates detrimentally affect The Gambia's international reputation. This negative perception can lead to the implementation of stricter visa conditions for all Gambian nationals, a situation already observed. US authorities are increasingly focusing their attention on countries exhibiting high overstay rates, with figures above 10% typically prompting additional checks and more rigorous documentation requirements for all visa applicants.
