AMVCA 2026 Unveils Iconic Fashion & Star-Studded Moments, Featuring Nana Akua Addo's Dazzling Gowns!

The 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) once again served as a magnificent spectacle, not just for celebrating African creativity in films and TV, but also as a prominent platform for groundbreaking fashion. Among the many memorable moments, Ghanaian actress and style icon Nana Akua Addo captivated attendees with not one, but three distinct and ambitious 'wearable art' looks, each meticulously curated by NK Style. Her presence at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos redefined red carpet expectations, transforming her appearance into a curated exhibition.

Nana Akua Addo's first look, dubbed 'The Cathedral Gown,' was a showstopper designed by Mohammed Abbas Ossu. This strapless gown drew its profound inspiration from the Cologne Cathedral in Germany, a celebrated example of Gothic architecture. From the hip, the skirt dramatically expanded into a vast, dome-shaped structure, intricately constructed from miniature Gothic spires, arches, and windows. These elements were hand-built and painted in ivory, grey, and blue tones, meticulously mimicking aged stone. Crosses adorned the tallest spires, and the negative space between the architectural components imbued the skirt with a three-dimensional quality, creating the illusion of standing within a cathedral. Accessorized with a rosary and gold statement earrings, this ensemble was hailed as one of the most ambitious fashion statements seen at the AMVCA in years.

For her second appearance, Nana Akua Addo presented 'The Living Stone,' another creation by Mohammed Abbas Ossu, which offered a rawer, geological aesthetic. This floor-length mermaid gown was crafted from large, irregular fragments of textured material, layered across the body to evoke crumpled earth or a dried rock face. The off-shoulder silhouette featured dramatically oversized puffed shoulders, fashioned from the same tactile material. Flashes of deep blue at the lower hem provided a deliberate contrast to the earthy tones above. Photographed against a dusty backdrop with actual soil and rock, the garment seamlessly blurred the lines between the dress and the ground, portraying a woman emerging directly from the earth itself. Ossu aptly described it as 'living stone,' a concept that materialized as something ancient and profoundly geological.

Nana Akua Addo's third and final look was 'The Spiral Dress,' a piece from The Unbound Collection by Indian designer Srushti Patil. This off-shoulder gown was ingeniously constructed from layered, curved panels, designed to replicate the iridescent scales of a fish. Each panel was exquisitely edged in blue, burgundy, and black crystal trim, meticulously stacked in a continuous spiral from the neckline to the floor. The back and shoulders featured panels that extended dramatically outward and upward, forming a large fan that mirrored a fish's fin, thus imparting a sweeping, aquatic quality to the entire silhouette. A fish-shaped beaded handbag completed the ensemble, making the aquatic concept both deliberate and comprehensive.

Beyond the sartorial marvels, the 12th AMVCA was rich with other highlights. In a historic first, Linda Ejiofor achieved a remarkable feat by winning both the Best Supporting Actress for her role in 'The Herd' and Best Actress for 'The Serpent’s Gift.' The awards ceremony celebrated numerous talents, with Uzor Arukwe taking home Best Lead Actor, and 'My Father’s Shadow' emerging as the Best Movie, also clinching the most awards overall. Akinola Davies Jr. was recognized as Best Director for 'My Father’s Shadow,' while Valerie Okeke won Best Costume Design for 'Colours of Fire.' Uche Montana was honored with the Trailblazer Award, and industry veterans Sola Sobowale and Kanayo O. Kanayo received the Industry Merit Award. Other notable winners included Daniel Anyiam for Best Editing in 'To Kill a Monkey' and Hakeem Onilogbo (Hakeem Effect) for Best Makeup, who delivered an inspiring speech on persistence and consistency.

The event also featured electrifying music performances from Afrobeats artists, who energized the audience throughout the night. BNXN opened the stage, followed by Fave and Tiwa Savage, whose captivating performances punctuated the intervals and closed out the show. The fashion aspect remained a central theme, with Nigerian designers proudly exhibiting African excellence through the stunning ensembles worn by various celebrities on the red carpet, reinforcing the AMVCA's reputation as a fusion of cinematic celebration and high fashion exhibition.
