Future Is Now: First Fully AI-Generated 'Journey to the West' Series Announced!
AI firm Utopai Studios and Chinese production company Huace have partnered to create a fully AI-generated adaptation of the classic “Journey to the West,” focusing on the Monkey King's origin story. Titled “The Lost Five Hundred Years,” the project leverages Utopai's PAI platform to build a global franchise while preserving the rich cultural depth of the original narrative. This collaboration aims to revolutionize storytelling through artificial intelligence for worldwide audiences.
AI firm Utopai Studios and Chinese production company Huace have announced a strategic partnership, with their first joint project being a fully AI-generated adaptation of the revered Chinese literary classic, “Journey to the West.” The new series, titled “Journey to the West: The Lost Five Hundred Years,” is set to explore the previously untold origin story of the mythological book’s central protagonist, the imprisoned Monkey King, Sun Wukong, and his eventual journey to protect the monk Jin Chanzi.
In this collaboration, Huace will take on the production responsibilities for the series, utilizing Utopai’s advanced AI storytelling platform, PAI. Utopai Studios, in turn, will maintain the distribution rights for the project outside of China, aiming for a broad international reach. Both companies envision this adaptation as the cornerstone for an expansive franchise, planned to span various broadcast, streaming, and theatrical platforms, indicating a long-term strategy for the iconic intellectual property.
Cecilia Shen, CEO and co-founder of Utopai Studios, emphasized the cultural significance of the source material. In a statement, she highlighted, “’Journey to the West’ is not only one of China’s most beloved cultural treasures — it is one of the great mythological universes in world entertainment.” Shen further articulated Utopai’s mission, stating that the partnership with Huace provides an opportunity to create a bold, new interpretation, starting with the emotional origin of Sun Wukong and his future companions. She reiterated that Utopai Studios was founded specifically to help partners unlock iconic IP, expand worlds to a franchise scale, and realize ambitious stories in ways previously unachievable.
Binxing Fu, CEO of Huace Group, echoed these sentiments, expressing that “’Journey to the West’ is a story Chinese audiences have lived with for generations, and it deserves to be reintroduced with scale, emotion and imagination.” He noted that the partnership with Utopai Studios enables them to bring this mythology to life in a fully AI-generated animated format, while crucially preserving the cultural depth, emotional power, and sense of wonder that have sustained the story for centuries. Fu also underscored the partnership’s potential to build the property across animated series and theatrical opportunities for a global audience.
The announcement of this ambitious project closely follows Utopai’s recent unveiling of PAI 2.0, the second version of its AI storytelling platform. According to Zijian He, Utopai’s chief scientific officer, PAI 2.0 is designed to significantly enhance the content production process by “preserving narrative context, maintaining consistency across extended sequences, and giving creators more granular control over the creative process.” He articulated Utopai’s goal for PAI 2.0, aiming to catalyze a “Claude Code moment” for media generation, suggesting a transformative impact on the industry.
Utopai Studios has also garnered significant support from prominent figures, including NBA stars Carmelo Anthony and James Harden. Carmelo Anthony has not only invested in Utopai through his production company, Creative 7, but has also joined the firm as a strategic partner. James Harden previously collaborated with Utopai, producing an animated short based on his beard using the first edition of the PAI platform in April. The development of this “Journey to the West” adaptation was initially reported by Deadline.
