Ford Ditches Google, Embraces Apple Maps for Next-Gen EVs!
Ford is adopting Apple Maps for its upcoming line of affordable electric vehicles, starting with a midsize pickup in 2027. This collaboration brings advanced EV-specific routing, automatic battery preconditioning, and data for the BlueCruise system directly into the car, without needing an iPhone. Ford has announced a significant partnership, choosing Apple Maps as the built-in navigation provider for its upcoming generation of affordable electric vehicles. This collaboration signifies a new direction for the automaker, integrating advanced mapping technology directly into its vehicles. Drivers will not require an iPhone to utilize the embedded navigation system, and importantly, Apple CarPlay will continue to be available alongside the new Apple Maps integration.
Apple Maps has undergone substantial enhancements in recent years, moving beyond basic navigation to offer a more comprehensive and intuitive experience. For electric vehicles, the application now directly integrates with the EV's data to accurately display remaining range, route drivers to nearby charging stations, and provide real-time information on charger availability. This EV-centric functionality is crucial for seamless long-distance travel and daily use.
A key component of this integration is Apple's new MapKit for Automotive SDK (software development kit). This SDK allows Ford to take the integration a step further, enabling automatic battery preconditioning when a charging stop is designated as the destination, optimizing charging efficiency. Furthermore, Ford's Latitude AI team will leverage Maps' detailed road-level data to advance the development of its next-generation BlueCruise hands-free driving system, aiming for enhanced safety and performance.

Ford plans to integrate Apple Maps into its Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, which will serve as the foundation for a new family of affordable EVs. The first model to emerge from this platform is slated to be a midsize pickup truck, launching in 2027, with an estimated starting price of around $30,000. While other models based on this platform have not been confirmed, additional trucks and SUVs are anticipated.
Rumors suggest that the upcoming midsize pickup could potentially revive the iconic Ranchero name, a speculation fueled by Ford's trademark filing in August 2025. A camouflaged prototype of this vehicle offered an early glimpse during a visit to Ford's Electric Vehicle Development Center in Long Beach, California, notable for its distinctive, sharply raked A-pillars, an unusual design element for a pickup.
At its launch, the truck is expected to offer a rear-wheel-drive configuration powered by a permanent-magnet motor. An all-wheel-drive variant will incorporate an additional induction motor on the front axle. The vehicle is reportedly planned to be exclusively available as a four-door crew cab, with multiple battery pack options allowing buyers to choose between a lower entry price and an extended driving range.
