Flying Eagles Soar! Ghana Edged in Electrifying WAFU B U-20 Clash

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have emphatically begun their quest for a third successive WAFU B U-20 Championship title, defeating arch-rivals Ghana’s Black Satellites 4-2 in a thrilling Group B opener held in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire. This highly anticipated encounter was a repeat of the 2024 final in Lomé, Togo, where Nigeria previously bested Ghana 2-1 to retain the regional title.

Head Coach Abdu Maikaba, commencing his competitive tenure as the team’s chief tactician, had made clear his ambition for an outright victory against Ghana, emphasizing the need to start the tournament strongly to achieve their objective of retaining the trophy. The Flying Eagles entered the match with confidence, having edged Athletique Club de Zenuola 2-1 in their final preparatory friendly fixture. The historic rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana, spanning back to 1951, added significant weight to the clash, promising more than just a regular group-stage fixture.

The Flying Eagles made a blistering start to the match. Olayemi Ayinla opened the scoring in just the sixth minute with a powerful strike that left the Ghanaian goalkeeper with no chance. Ghana, however, responded in the 23rd minute when Mohammed Zaidan restored parity, leveling the score at 1-1. Nigeria quickly regained control, with Lucky Oraro's free-kick taking a wicked deflection seven minutes later, finding the back of the net to put the Flying Eagles ahead 2-1.

The Nigerian youngsters continued to apply pressure and were rewarded with a penalty in the 38th minute. Muiz Adeleke confidently converted from the spot, extending Nigeria’s lead to 3-1 going into half-time. Coach Maikaba made one change at the interval, introducing Adamu Hussaini for Imrana Muhammad as Nigeria aimed to maintain their advantage.

In the second half, Ghana reduced the deficit in the 60th minute after being awarded a penalty, which Kelvin Nkrumah converted to make the score 3-2. This goal briefly shifted momentum towards the Black Satellites, who pushed aggressively for an equalizer. Nigeria survived this period of pressure and gradually reasserted control over the contest. Muiz Adeleke had an opportunity to settle the match in the 84th minute but failed to convert a one-on-one chance with the Ghanaian goalkeeper.

However, Adeleke was handed another opportunity shortly afterwards and made no mistake. Nigeria was awarded a second penalty in the 89th minute, and Adeleke stepped up once more to complete his brace, sealing a dominant 4-2 victory for the Flying Eagles. This result represents a strong opening statement from Nigeria in their quest for regional honors and gives them an early advantage in Group B. Ghana will now need to regroup quickly ahead of their next fixture.

Following this victory against Ghana, the Flying Eagles are scheduled to face Togo’s Sparrow Hawks on July 30 and will conclude their group campaign against Burkina Faso’s Young Stallions on August 2. Both matches will be held at the Lycée Scientifique de Yamoussoukro.
