Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," starring Matt Damon, has stormed the global box office, quickly surpassing $600 million in just two weekends. The R-rated epic's impressive performance, significantly bolstered by IMAX sales, solidifies Nolan's status as a top-tier director. Other major films, including "Toy Story 5," have also crossed the $1 billion mark, indicating a robust year for cinema.
Christopher Nolan's adaptation ofThe Odyssey has crossed $639.6 million at the global box office just two weeks after its release, cementing its status as one of the year's biggest cinematic successes.
The film has generated $353.2 million internationally and $284.4 million domestically, despite its nearly three-hour runtime, R-rating, and reported $250 million production budget. Its strong performance further reinforces Nolan's reputation for delivering commercially successful original blockbuster films.
The film added $128.3 million from 81 international markets during its second weekend and recorded an exceptionally small decline in ticket sales in holdover territories. Major overseas markets include the United Kingdom and Ireland, France, Italy, Australia and Germany, while releases in China, Japan and South Korea are still pending.
The Odyssey has also become the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX cameras, contributing approximately $140 million in global IMAX ticket sales and setting several records for the premium format.
Industry analysts expect the film to comfortably surpass the $1 billion mark if its current momentum continues. Demand for Nolan's preferred 70mm IMAX screenings remains exceptionally high, with tickets reportedly sold out weeks in advance in several locations.
The film's box office success comes amid a strong year for Hollywood releases, with Toy Story 5 already surpassing $1 billion globally and other major titles continuing to perform strongly in cinemas worldwide.
