Emily Rudd Unpacks Nami's 'Skill Level' Evolution in 'One Piece' Season 3

With One Piece Season 2, titled "Into the Grand Line," now fully available for streaming on Netflix and One Piece Season 3 already in production, actress Emily Rudd, who portrays Nami, recently shared insights into her character's journey and future developments. Rudd discussed her transition from the Fear Street trilogy to One Piece, highlighting Nami's significant moments in Season 2 and offering tantalizing hints about what's to come in the next installment.

Nami undergoes substantial personal growth in "Into the Grand Line." She cultivates greater confidence in her navigation skills, overcomes the debilitating effects of a Kestia bite, and learns to lean more on her fellow Straw Hats. A defining element of Nami's Season 2 arc, which is set to be a major driving force in Season 3, is her evolving connection with Charithra Chandran's character, Vivi.

Rudd also reflected on how the addition of Charithra Chandran impacted the atmosphere on set, noting that "it’s also nice to have another girl on board." This sentiment mirrored Nami's line to Vivi in Season 2, Episode 5, where she acknowledges the comfort of having another girl in the crew. For Rudd, after spending a full season predominantly with her male co-stars—Iñaki Godoy (Luffy), Mackenyu (Zoro), Jacob Romero (Usopp), and Taz Skylar (Sanji)—the presence of another main female ensemble member was a novel experience. She admitted to initially overthinking her interactions, much like Nami, before realizing the natural ease of their bond, culminating in real-life "girls' nights" and beach outings.

The dynamic between Nami and Vivi within the show began with Nami's profound hesitation. Vivi initially appeared as the Baroque Works agent Miss Wednesday, leading Nami to distrust her actions and words. In Episode 3, despite Luffy's readiness to protect Vivi, Nami insisted on a mercenary arrangement. However, this skepticism rapidly dissolved after Nami witnessed Igaram’s (Yonda Thomas) selfless sacrifice and Vivi’s subsequent grief. Rudd explained that this moment connected with Nami's deep-seated trust issues from Season 1, which she is gradually overcoming. Nami, having experienced profound loss with her mother and, in a sense, her sister and community, empathized with Vivi's sorrow. This shared understanding prompted Nami to extend the same trust and support she was learning to accept from the Straw Hats to Vivi, with a resolve to "figure this out together."

Nami’s commitment to supporting Vivi is slated to intensify significantly in One Piece Season 3. When queried about new acting challenges, Rudd pointed to Nami’s evolving skills as a navigator, reaching a level of expertise that she acknowledges surpasses some of her crewmates, a topic she discusses with Usopp. This personal growth, similar to her navigation confidence in Season 2 amidst the Grand Line's challenges, will become even more profound in Season 3.

Rudd emphasized that Nami’s primary focus for the upcoming season will be ensuring Vivi’s well-being. While Luffy remains dedicated to finding the One Piece, Nami's personal mission will be to show Vivi, "we've got her." This profound care for Vivi translates into Nami's desire to protect her "girl." Rudd also teased that Season 3 will adopt a more "grounded" narrative approach. While retaining the series' characteristic "wacky wild elements," the underlying story will be relatable, timely, and resonate with a global audience, offering a powerful message of hope for all involved.
