TikTok Trends Shaping the Music Industry
TikTok has changed how we consume music, and it is not just about shorter attention spans. This social media platform, with 1.9 billion users, now plays a role in how we discover music.
Gone are the days when radio airplay, album sales, and traditional media alone determined what made a song a hit.
Today, TikTok, a platform built for short, snappy videos, is rewriting the rules of the music industry.
It has become one of the fastest ways to watch clips, share videos, and search for information. Users can also earn money through live-streaming.
Over time, the platform has grown into more than just an app, it has become a digital home for many.
Its format favors catchy hooks, loopable beats, and instantly relatable content, giving artists a new way to reach audiences and grow their careers.
Billboard published an article on how a potential TikTok ban would disrupt the Hot 100 charts, citing less indie/lesser-known artists receiving recognition and the type of songs that get listed would shift.
TikTok does not just promote music, it creates culture. It encourages users to remix, reinterpret, and personalize songs, turning fans into active participants rather than passive listeners.
The platform also changes how songs are written and produced. Producers now consider TikTok virality when crafting songs, emphasizing hooks, drops, or lyrics that can inspire challenges or memes.
This has led to a new kind of music economy, where short clips, fan participation, and social engagement are as valuable as radio spins or album sales.
Ralph Jaccodine, Assistant Professor of Music Business/Management, highlighted TikTok's capacity to cater to users’ appetite for a song’s most addictive elements.
“The success of TikTok has to do with a lot of AI, and figuring out what people want, and figuring out how to expand and explode a song, and get global reach for that,” he says.
“The platform has more than a billion active users. . . . That's a lot of power.",
One way songwriters are approaching the challenge of giving TikTok users what they want involves reconfiguring the traditional pop song structure.

TikTok moves fast, demanding that songwriters capture their audience’s attention right from the start.
But there’s an art to achieving this.
“You have to be very selective about what you introduce first,” Alejandro says. “It can't be too complicated. It has to be super catchy, really fast.”
Since the chorus is typically the catchiest part of the song, many songwriters choose to lead with it on TikTok, but Alejandro cautions against revealing too much of the chorus upfront. Instead, he says, it should leave listeners curious to hear more.
Viral Clips: From Unknown Tracks to Global Hits
Historically, musicians would have to get noticed and approved by industry gatekeepers, but TikTok removes the middleman by giving an enormous global stage for aspiring musicians.
There have been a number of inspiring success stories ofartists who have found success via TikTok.
Artists like Lil Nas X and Doja Cat saw their tracks climb the charts after TikTok users made them part of dance challenges or memes before dominating Billboard charts worldwide, proving that virality can bypass traditional gatekeepers entirely.
Even older songs get a second chance: Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams resurfaced decades later, all because of a short clip that captured viewers’ imaginations.
A 15-second clip can transform a song overnight. Unknown artists have seen their tracks climb global charts just because their song inspired a viral dance, a comedic skit, or a heartfelt story.
Even classics can experience a resurgence: Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” trended decades after its release because of a viral video of someone skateboarding while sipping cranberry juice. Similarly, older hits by artists like Beyoncé, Drake, and Rihanna have found new audiences on the platform, bridging generational gaps in music appreciation.
Moreover, TikTok has globalized music trends. Songs in languages or genres that previously had niche audiences, like Afrobeats, Latin pop, K-pop, or drill rap and now reach millions worldwide through viral trends.
Short-Form Hooks and Creative Songwriting
The 15- to 60-second format of TikTok has changed the way music is made. Artists now focus on memorable hooks or loopable sections that are perfect for dances, lip-syncs, or comedic videos.
This has influenced production choices, with viral potential often guiding songwriting decisions.

TikTok has turned part of the music creation process into a collaborative game between artists and audiences, where one catchy moment can determine a song’s success.
Alejandro also commented that,“TikTok has become the discovery platform for artists today.”
“This new chart is a significant development in how artists find their place in the industry, because a lot of these songs aren't on the radio or on television.
A lot of these songs are solely living in the ether of the internet, and TikTok is a great place to see how they're doing.”
Fans as Co-Creators: The Power of Participation
Unlike traditional media, TikTok puts audiences in the spotlight.
Users don’t just listen, they create content around songs, performing dances, memes, or storytelling videos.
This co-creation amplifies a track’s reach exponentially, helping it chart on Spotify, Apple Music, and Billboard.
By making fans active participants rather than passive listeners, TikTok has blurred the line between promotion and entertainment, creating a musical ecosystem driven by engagement.
Conclusion
TikTok has reshaped the music industry by making virality, participation, and short-form creativity central to a song’s success.
From unknown tracks becoming global hits to fans influencing the charts, TikTok has proven that the future of music is social, collaborative, and unpredictable.
For artists and listeners alike, the platform isn’t just a place to watch videos, it’s a stage where music culture is constantly reinvented.
In essence, TikTok has transformed music consumption into a social, participatory, and highly dynamic experience, where every user can shape what becomes the next big hit.
It’s not just a platform; it’s a cultural engine, redefining fame, creativity, and the very concept of a “hit song.”
