Dogecoin Plunges 599% as Whales Abandon Ship: What it Means for Crypto
Dogecoin experienced a sharp drop in spot flows and price, influenced by a broader crypto market pullback and macroeconomic concerns. Despite these challenges, it shows signs of recovery, with traders anticipating a Q4 turnaround amidst headwinds like Bitwise sunsetting its Dogecoin ETF due to low institutional demand.
Dogecoin (DOGE) recently experienced a significant reduction in spot flows, registering a 7-day spot net flow percentage of -599.50%. This metric indicates that spot outflows considerably surpassed inflows, with CoinGlass data showing $480.96 million in spot inflows against $538.16 million in outflows during the past week. A decrease in spot flow, particularly on exchanges, can suggest a scarcity of coins being deposited for trading. Conversely, an increase in spot outflows may imply that investors are moving their holdings into cold storage, often viewed as a bullish signal, especially during periods of price decline when large holders might be accumulating at a discount.
The broader cryptocurrency market's pullback, combined with a prior buildup of leverage, played a crucial role in Dogecoin's recent downturn. DOGE's price fell for four consecutive days, reaching a low of $0.081 on October 8, as investors reacted to macroeconomic concerns. This decline followed a strong run for altcoins into late September, which had seen significant leverage accumulation in the market, leading to a subsequent forced unwind.
Despite the recent challenges, expectations for a Q4 recovery persist. On the one-year anniversary of the 10/10 flash crash, recognized as the largest liquidation event in crypto history, Dogecoin showed signs of resilience, trading in the green at $0.086. The cryptocurrency's short-term price action came back into focus after it overcame a death cross on the three-hour chart and returned to positive territory on the daily chart. Following a relatively flat Q3 2026, which included only a minor rally in August, traders are now looking towards Q4 2026 for a potential turnaround.
However, Dogecoin is navigating several headwinds. A notable factor is Bitwise's decision in September to sunset its Dogecoin ETF (BWOW) less than a year after its launch, citing sub-scale institutional demand; trading for this fund is scheduled to conclude in October 2026. Furthermore, Dogecoin's subdued performance in Q3 was exacerbated by Hyperliquid overtaking DOGE in late Q2 and a wider industry trend towards revenue-driven tokenomics, shifting away from models that may have previously favored Dogecoin. Currently, Dogecoin stands as the world's 11th largest cryptocurrency, boasting a market capitalization of $14.8 billion, placing it just ahead of Zcash.
