Akontombra (WN/R), June 7, GNA – Mr Joseph Appiah, the Sefwi- Akontombra District Chief Executive (DCE), in the Western North Region, in collaboration with the Girl Child Education Unit has distributed over 640 sanitary pads to adolescent female students within the Akontombra zone.

The beneficiary schools within the zone are Bawakrom, Mesiba, Manukrom, Bronikrom, Aburonehia, Pentecost JHS, and Anglican JHS.

The DCE said the distribution of the sanitary pads were in fulfilment of President John Dramani Mahama’s promise to support all school-going young girls in the country to stay clean and healthy during their menstrual periods.

Mr Appiah told the pupils about the importance of maintaining personal hygiene during menstruation and encouraged them to speak confidently about their needs with their parents during such periods.

Mrs Emilia Ford Journey, the Akontombra District Coordinator for Girl Child Education, described the initiative as a significant milestone by the government in the fight against periods of poverty, and a crucial step to ensure menstrual hygiene for the girls.

She said the Free Sanitary Pads programme was a ground-breaking effort that would help improve upon menstrual hygiene and empower teenage girls to lead healthier and dignified lives.

Mrs Ford said they were looking forward to meaningful engagements and actions that would make this initiative not just a short-term, but a lasting intervention.
