Box Office Battleground: 'The Odyssey' Crushes 'Moana' Remake's Hopes!

The Disney's live-action "Moana"remake has faced significant commercial challenges in its early release, especially when pitted against Christopher Nolan's latest cinematic offering, "The Odyssey."

In its second weekend, the "Moana" remake experienced a steep fall, indicative of an underperforming box office run that began with mediocre reviews and a disappointing first weekend.

The film, which cost up to $250 million to produce, with a gross fit less than $100 millionworldwide in its opening weekend, with only $43 million coming from domestic theaters.

This places it in a similar category to recent superhero films that struggled commercially, such as "Supergirl" and "Joker: Folie à Deux."

The downward trend continued into its second weekend, with a 70% plummet on its second Friday and an approximate 55% drop over the sophomore frame, resulting in an estimated $18 million domestically.

This pushed its running domestic total to just over $80 million, while globally, "Moana" has amassed more than $170 million so far.

Several factors are being attributed to the remake's underperformance, and this was released merely 10 years after the highly popular animated original, the relatively short window between the two versions is seen as a major impediment.

Furthermore, an animated sequel, "Moana 2," was released just two years prior, potentially saturating the market and diminishing demand for a live-action retelling.

Critically, the remake holds a 31% critics' score and an 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus stating,

"The sea calls to no one in this underwhelming new version of Moana, an endeavor that solidifies its animated predecessor as the superior adventure."

In contrast, Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," also produced with a $250 million budget, has debuted to immense success.

In just three days, Nolan's epic has already surpassed what Disney's remake is projected to struggle to achieve in its entire theatrical run.

"The Odyssey" generated around $120 million domesticallyand approximately $260 million worldwide in its opening weekend, marking a record debut for its star, Matt Damon.

It also delivered Nolan's biggest global opening, surpassing his previous hits like "The Dark KnightRises" and "The Dark Knight."

"The Odyssey" has garnered widespread critical acclaim, holding a "Certified Fresh" 95% critics' score and a "Verified Hot" 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The aggregator website's consensus praises the film, noting, "Reinvigorating an ancient adventure with majestic sweep and sterling work by its colossal ensemble, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey imbues myth with primal human feeling."

The "Moana" live-action remake stars Dwayne Johnson as Maui and newcomer Catherine Laga'aia as Moana.

This was directed by Thomas Kail, with a runtime of 120 minutes and a release date of July 10, 2026, the film's screenplay was penned by Dana Ledoux Miller and Jared Bush.
