BMW Unleashes Humanoid Robot Workforce in Germany, Setting Europe's Factory Future

BMW Group has initiated a groundbreaking pilot project at its Leipzig plant in Germany, deploying humanoid robots in manufacturing for the first time in Europe. This move signals a significant shift, demonstrating that physical AI is now a global industrial reality, extending beyond North American and East Asian borders. The European deployment follows a successful ten-month trial conducted by BMW in 2025 at its Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant. During this US pilot, Figure AI’s Figure 02 robot supported the production of over 30,000 BMW X3s, working 10-hour shifts and handling more than 90,000 components, providing valuable lessons for the Leipzig implementation.
The humanoid robot introduced in Leipzig is AEON, developed by Hexagon Robotics' Zurich-based division. AEON is designed purely as an industrial machine, as articulated by Arnaud Robert, President of Hexagon Robotics: “We’re not in the dancing business–we’re in the working business.” This philosophy is evident in its design. Unlike bipedal robots, AEON utilizes wheels for locomotion, a decision based on extensive testing revealing superior efficiency in speed and energy use on factory-grade flat floors. Standing 1.65 meters tall and weighing 60 kilograms, AEON can reach speeds of 2.5 meters per second and features an autonomous battery swap system that takes just 23 seconds, enabling continuous, around-the-clock operation without human intervention. Equipped with 22 integrated sensors, including peripheral cameras, time-of-flight sensors, infrared, SLAM cameras, and microphones, AEON possesses full 360-degree real-time spatial awareness, allowing it to perform intricate quality inspection tasks that traditional stationary robots cannot. Its human-like torso is designed to flexibly dock a wide variety of grippers, hand elements, and scanning tools, facilitating its multifunctional deployment across diverse production environments.
The deployment at Leipzig is part of a deliberate, phased strategy. AEON’s initial test deployment occurred in December 2025, with a further test run scheduled for April 2026. A full pilot phase is set to launch in summer 2026, involving two AEON units working simultaneously across two distinct use cases: high-voltage battery assembly and component manufacturing for exterior parts. Leipzig was chosen as the pilot site due to its status as BMW’s most technologically comprehensive German plant, integrating battery production, injection molding, a press shop, body shop, and final assembly under one roof. A successful deployment here effectively validates physical AI across the entire production spectrum. To institutionalize this effort, BMW has established a Centre of Competence for Physical AI in Production, aiming to consolidate expertise across the group and create a defined evaluation path for technology partners, from lab testing to full pilot phases. As Felix Haeckel, Team Lead for the center, emphasized, this initiative pools expertise to make AI and robotics knowledge widely usable within the company.
BMW's strategic approach is further highlighted by the robust infrastructure supporting AEON. The humanoid robot operates within a uniform data platform that replaces previous data silos across BMW’s production network, ensuring consistent, standardized, and accessible information. This architecture is crucial for AI agents to operate autonomously and learn continuously. AEON itself runs on NVIDIA Jetson Orin onboard computers and was extensively trained through simulation using NVIDIA’s Isaac platform, a method that allowed Hexagon to develop core locomotion capabilities in weeks rather than months. The project also leverages Microsoft Azure for scalable model development and Maxon’s actuators for locomotion, integrating advanced technologies for seamless operation.
Beyond the immediate success at Leipzig, this initiative carries broader implications for the enterprise AI world. Deloitte’s State of AI in the Enterprise 2026 report indicates that 58% of companies are already using physical AI, a figure projected to reach 80% within two years, with Asia Pacific leading in early implementation. BMW’s Leipzig pilot serves as a compelling proof point in this trajectory, demonstrating that humanoid robots in manufacturing have advanced beyond laboratory experiments and press releases. They are now undergoing rigorous stress-testing against the demanding standards of real industrial production. Milan Nedeljković, BMW’s Board Member for Production, underscored this by stating that “The symbiosis of engineering expertise and artificial intelligence opens up completely new possibilities in production.” This pioneering move by BMW Group sets a precedent, and the focus now shifts to how quickly the rest of the European industry will adopt similar advanced physical AI solutions.
