This announcement also highlights the continued success of Mafi's new series, "The New Republic."
Warner Bros. has officially acquired the film rights to Tahereh Mafi’s highly acclaimed and bestselling dystopian young adult series, “Shatter Me.” This significant movie deal coincides with the 15th anniversary of the initial release of “Shatter Me,” the inaugural book in the original series. The series has garnered immense popularity, becoming a global BookTok phenomenon, boasting sales of over 15 million copies worldwide and generating more than 500,000 social media posts using related hashtags.
The “Shatter Me” series introduces readers to Juliette Ferrars, a teenage girl endowed with a lethal touch, who finds herself challenging an authoritarian totalitarian regime known as The Reestablishment. The narrative intricately follows Juliette’s transformative journey as she uncovers her unique power, cultivates inner strength, and navigates a complex dystopian world filled with elements of romance and rebellion.
Expressing her enthusiasm for the film adaptation, Tahereh Mafi stated, “I’ve been tremendously lucky to have a devoted fanbase over the last fifteen years, and I’m excited for the chance to bring the ‘Shatter Me’ world and characters to life in a way that will honor the fans and their love for these books.” She further added, “Warner Bros. has been a great partner so far, and I’m looking forward to creating a memorable cinematic experience that elevates the series to new heights.” The project will be produced by industry veterans including Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen from Temple Hill, Karen Rosenfelt from Sunswept Entertainment, and Kevin McCormick of Langley Park Pictures. This project marks the first announcement under McCormick’s new producing deal at Warner Bros. Tahereh Mafi herself is set to serve as an executive producer. The “Shatter Me” series has achieved a wide international reach, having been published in 38 territories and translated into 34 languages globally.
Beyond the original series, Mafi expanded the “Shatter Me” universe last year with the release of “Watch Me,” the first installment in her new series titled “The New Republic.” This new series is set a decade after the collapse of The Reestablishment. “Watch Me” quickly became an instant No. 1 New York Times bestseller and maintained its top position for seven consecutive weeks. The second book in “The New Republic” series, “Release Me,” launched in April and similarly achieved instant No. 1 bestseller status. The third book, “Escape Me,” is scheduled for release in September. Tahereh Mafi is represented by Writers House and Anonymous Content, with Anonymous Content facilitating the deal on behalf of Writers House.
