Banned Somali Referee Omar Artan Sparks Global Debate, Receives Hero's Welcome Amid Super Cup Selection
Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, initially denied entry to the United States for the FIFA World Cup, has been appointed by UEFA to officiate the prestigious 2026 Super Cup final. This significant assignment follows a heroic welcome in Somalia and underscores international confidence in his elite refereeing abilities. Artan will oversee the clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa.
Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, a figure of significant international football renown, has been appointed by UEFA to officiate the 2026 Super Cup final between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa. This prestigious assignment comes just weeks after Artan faced a major setback when he was denied entry into the United States, which prevented him from officiating at the FIFA World Cup.
Artan had been on the verge of making history as the first Somali referee to officiate at a FIFA World Cup. However, his aspirations were thwarted when he was denied entry at Miami International Airport, despite possessing a diplomatic passport and a valid single-entry US visa. No official reason was provided by US immigration authorities for his repatriation, though Somalia is among several countries on a US travel ban list. His exclusion from the tournament sparked widespread disappointment across the global football community, and FIFA subsequently removed him from the list of officials. In an interview, Artan expressed profound disappointment, stating, "I had the right papers and everything. I had the right visa. I am very, very disappointed. I’m just simply a referee who’s trying to live his dream, the biggest dream of my life, to come to the World Cup." A related news headline mentioned US claims of suspected terror links, though this was not confirmed by Artan or UEFA.
Upon his return to Somalia, Artan received a heroic welcome from hundreds of people who gathered at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu. He was greeted by government officials, representatives of the Somali Football Federation, fellow referees, and local residents. Supporters carried banners and wore specially made hats bearing his picture, with social media celebrities live-streaming the event. Amidst the celebratory reception, there was also visible anger among the crowd regarding the US government's decision to ban him. Despite the ban, Artan conveyed his happiness for the overwhelming support, stating, "I would like to thank the officials, ministers, MPs and everyone. I want to thank my country and people for their support. The encouragement I received here, I know I’ll get more support outside (the airport)." He vowed to continue his refereeing career, expressing determination to resume training immediately, and even stated his intention to officiate at the 2030 World Cup. He was also expected to attend a public event at Mogadishu Stadium and watch a local match.
In a significant demonstration of confidence in his abilities and professionalism, UEFA announced Artan's appointment for the 2026 Super Cup. This match, scheduled for August 12 in Salzburg, will feature UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and UEFA Europa League champions Aston Villa. According to a UEFA statement, the decision followed discussions with the Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF). UEFA highlighted Artan’s impressive profile, noting that despite his young age (34), he has established himself as one of the world's top referees and has been on the FIFA international list since 2018. His notable achievements include officiating the second leg of the 2025-26 CAF Champions League final and receiving the CAF Men’s Referee of the Year Award in 2025. This appointment is widely seen as a major endorsement, cementing his status among Africa’s elite referees and positioning him to take centre stage in one of European football’s most prestigious annual fixtures, which is expected to attract a global audience.
