America's Top Sandwiches Revealed: Which States Are Craving What?

Sandwiches, a versatile culinary staple, can elevate any meal from breakfast to dinner. From a hearty bacon and egg bagel to a satisfying turkey lunch or a flavorful pulled pork dinner, the possibilities are endless. However, not all sandwiches are created equal, and preferences can vary significantly by location. Coventry Direct conducted a survey to identify the favorite sandwich in each U.S. state, pairing perfect bread with ideal fillings. While some states predictably gravitated towards barbecue or locally iconic sandwiches, others presented genuine surprises, including one state uniquely choosing peanut butter and jelly. This comprehensive look reveals how states ranked their top sandwich choices and explores the reasons behind these tasty selections.

The turkey sandwich emerged as a clear fan favorite, chosen by seven states: Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Washington. Its popularity is attributed to its ease of preparation and the versatility of toppings, offering a wide array of options on a solid foundation. Furthermore, the preference for turkey sandwiches in states like Minnesota and Missouri may be linked to their significant turkey production. Minnesota stands as the largest producer in the country, raising over 33 million turkeys annually, while Missouri is also a top producer with nearly 15 million turkeys raised each year, according to the USDA.

Grilled cheese secured its place as a cheesy favorite, selected by six states: Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. For residents of Wisconsin, this choice comes as no surprise, given the state's status as the highest cheese producer in the nation. It was a logical choice for Wisconsin to favor grilled cheese above all other sandwiches.

Pastrami on rye was the top pick in four states, spanning both coasts. California and Nevada in the West, and New York and New Jersey in the East, all favored this classic deli offering. It is widely believed that pastrami was introduced to the United States by Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe who brought their traditional recipes. They established restaurants and delis that showcased this flavorful meat, eventually popularizing the pastrami sandwich which captivated New Yorkers and subsequently spread its appeal across the country.
