Nairobi, Kenya, became the epicenter of continental and global discussions in May 2026, as it hosted the highly anticipated Africa Forward Summit, also referred to as the Africa–France Summit. Co-chaired by Kenyan President William Ruto and French President Emmanuel Macron, the two-day event on May 11-12 convened over 30 Heads of State and Government, global financiers, business leaders, policymakers, development partners, and civil society representatives, with thousands of delegates in attendance.

The summit's overarching goal was to chart a new development path for Africa, focusing on home-grown solutions, regional integration, and youth empowerment amidst mounting global economic and geopolitical pressures. Key discussions centered on Africa’s economic transformation, governance, innovation, climate resilience, and intra-African trade. A significant aspect included reforming the international financial system, expanding digital technology, and promoting green industrialization, with Kenya and France co-chairing these critical dialogues. The forum aimed to forge new partnerships for sustainable growth and economic transformation across the continent.

Preparations for the high-level summit intensified days prior to its official opening. On May 9, Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio arrived in Nairobi, received by Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano. President Bio, a leading voice on education reforms in West Africa, was among the first dignitaries. Later that same day, Côte d’Ivoire President Alassane Ouattara also landed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, welcomed by CS Miano. On May 10, Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. arrived and was received by Maurice Okoth, Deputy Director General and Coordinator of the Diplomatic Conference Centre. The French President Emmanuel Macron arrived on Sunday afternoon, May 10, received by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, alongside Cabinet Secretaries Aden Duale and Geoffrey Ruku.

Ahead of the summit, President William Ruto engaged in a series of crucial bilateral meetings at State House, Nairobi, on May 10. He met with Côte d’Ivoire President Alassane Ouattara, agreeing to bolster diplomatic and economic ties, with Kenya committing to open an embassy in Côte d’Ivoire and appoint its first ambassador. Discussions with Liberian President Joseph Boakai focused on cooperation in agriculture, education, technology, and trade, reinforcing alignment on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), climate action, and regional peace and security. President Ruto also hosted Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio, emphasizing strong relations rooted in pan-Africanism and mutual respect. Furthermore, he met with African Development Bank Group President Sidi Ould Tah to discuss Africa’s financial independence and development financing, expressing Kenya's support for the New African Financial Architecture Framework. During these meetings, President Ruto also sought support for Supreme Court Judge Njoki Ndung’u’s candidature for a judge position at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The Africa Forward Summit marked a historic moment as the first high-level Africa-France dialogue held in an Anglophone African country, attracting prominent figures such as UN Secretary-General António Guterres, African Union Commission chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, and International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. Kenya’s hosting of the event underscored Nairobi’s growing reputation as a premier regional diplomatic and conference hub, building on its recent history of hosting major continental and international meetings on climate change, trade, technology, and peacebuilding.
